"Impossible'1 ".. . [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural and Livestock Weekly — 28 May 1896

Impossible1 .. . THAT WORD IS OFTEN A MISTAKE . HOW RESOLUTION AND REASON MAKE THE IMPOSSIBLE POSSIBLE . • fAre you the young iuan who pretends to do the impossibles ; to tie a knot in a stretched string ? This was the question Minister of War Carnot of France , grandfather of the late president , asked a ; hundred years ago of a young inventor by the name of Jacquard , who had invented a machine for weaving nets without the use of a shuttle . He was not long in showing that his machine would do the very thing ; the assumed impossibility was possible . True science is always ready to find impossibilities in anything new or unusual . The philosophers of Salamanca were sure it was impossible for Columbus to sail around the globe because he would have to sail up-hill one way . When , Stephenson was planning his locomotive , the wiseacres were sure that it would never run without cogs on the tracks , and the wheels , they would certainly i slip round and round , and the locomotive . wou...

NEWS COMMENTS [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural and Livestock Weekly — 4 June 1896

NEWS COMMENTS A season unparalleled for atmospheric disturbances was crowned with the most terrible storm in all history on Wednesday of last week . St . Louis is mourning for hundreds of slain , binding up the wounds of other hundreds and working with a will to clear her streets of the mass of debris left by the angry elements . The cyclone , which was the first in history to strike a large city , made its appearance about five thirty p . m . and moved in a northeasterly direction , following the line of the river . Its resistless violence was such that great steamers , heavily loaded freight cars and huge brick and stone buildings were swept away like children s play ^ - things . The lives lost in St . Louis and East St . Louis are reported to have numbered 567 . Property was destroyed to the value of thirty-five millions . The approaches to the great Eads Bridge across the Mississippi , great masses of stone and masonry , built to stand for centuries , were toppled over like buil...

Did you ever wonder what that heavy ¦ wei ght on one side of a locomotivewheel was there for ? stands _ V ^ 2 S [ \ V >/ Anyone who under- ^^^ s ^ yy mechanics ^ dr ^ \** r knows , the need of a counter-balance to equalize power and keep the machinery going with a steady even motion . Without it the machinery would wrench itself out of shape . It is the same way with the machinery of the human-body : it needs to go on steadily and regularly to . be in good health—not by fits and starts . The sudden wrenching medicines which people sometimes take to overcome constipation , give a violent strain to the intestines which weakens them , so that th ? costiveness is afterwards worse than before . What costive people need is a natural laxative like Dr . Pierce s Pleasant Pellets which are powerful without being violent . They move the bowels gradually and comfortably but surely . You can regulate the dose— -one , two or three Pellets —exactly as you need . They strengthen the int...

AMONG HORSEMEN [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural and Livestock Weekly — 4 June 1896

AMONG HORSEMEN FEEDING THE COLT . Not enough care and thought are given to the colts on the farm . The dam of the youngster that is suckled while she must work or graze on . scanty grounds , is allowed too often insufficient food . To sustain herself and perform the duties of a beast of burden ! and besides furnish building material for the growth of her offspring , generous food of proper quality should be supplied . Generous grazing , combined with sound , clear oats , to the latter coarse wheat shorts being added , furnish a satisfactory ration after the foal is one week old . While grazing is plenty there is little danger in giving the dam too much oats . Up to July when old oats are used , if in connection with dry hay , a bran mash should be given , also , every other day , and in some cases daily , if costiveness in either dam or the colt is observed to be of the chronic sort . A little corn for variety , will be helpful in maintaining good appearance of condition ; but oats ...
