THE PHILIPPINES . [Newspaper Article] — Farm Home — 1 April 1904

THE PHILIPPINES . Affairs in the Philippine islands are gradually getting into better shape . It cannot be expected that matters In these distant islands will In a few months or even years present the staid AGRICULTURAL BUILDING , WORLDS FAIR . and orderly appearance of a New England state . Time is an essential element of all progress . The Moros and other anti-American nations are quickly learning by experience that forcible resistance to changed conditions is not only hopeless but dangerous to those who are foolish enough to persist in it . Their power for evil is becoming more limited every day and will soon cease altogether . Another of those opposition leaders has come to a sad end . He was known as Macario Sakay , who claimed to be president of the Filipino republic . Having some time ago been amnestied by the commissioners , he , with a few followers , betook himself to the hills . He made harassing attacks on villages within his reach , and did all the mischief he could . I...

CENSUS OF LIVE STOCK . [Newspaper Article] — Farm Home — 1 April 1904

CENSUS OF LIVE STOCK . J . S . Charlton , special agent of the Bureau of Statistics of the United States Department of Agriculture , in a recent address , said : • Special work upon live stock statistics has never been attempted by the department prior to 1903 . The reason for this has been that the work of the department has been very rapidly expanding in many directions during the last few years and the requirements of the department have called steadily for increased appropriations . The necessity for a more exact knowledge of live stock conditions throughout the country has been apparent for a long time , but it has been difficult to secure from Congress enough money to perform the work . The thing most needed in this connection is a correct and classified census of live stock , which should be taken in 1905 . If this census is not taken at that time the great live stock interests of the country—valued on Jan . 1 , 1904 , by the department at $ 3 ,- 000 , 000 , 000—will be compe...
