£». fl«»««l Journal. ST. CLOUD, MINNESOTA. Thursday, Feb. 10,1876. COOKIXtt FOOD lull STOCK. Mr. V. S. Beekman, of Ulster oo., I*. Y., evidently has a pocr opinion of cooking food for cows. Ho details in the New York Tribune, some ot bis experience in this line. He had seen in several agricultural papers, and in a pamphlet edited by one who had an ax to grind, that there were large profit! arising from cooking food for cows. From these statements it ap peared that there was a saving from cooking cjf one-third of the feed, and he concluded that if by cooking $900 worth of food he could make it no as far as $1 200 uncooked he could af ford to pay 965fora steamer and "go in." Well, he tried the cooking busi ness one winter and got enough of it. The labor, he says, is increased ten fold. In cold weather only a little can be fed at a time, as stock do not like it cold. He thinks not one out of ten, who advocate cooking, do their own work, and, tor his part, he had rather spend his spare ...

:... £|. floml fmttffil ST. CLOUD, MINNESOTA. Thursday, Feb. 17,1876. BUSING CALVES IX WINTER. Increased attention is being paid to the raising of calves and it is proba ble that icwer will bo "deaconed/* i. e. killed immediately after birth, this year than has formerly been the case. The New York Fanner gives interesting and sensible observations on the best time and mode of grow* ing calves Milkmen living near good market often find it better to kill their calves immediately than to fat them, even in the spring, when veal sells readily, for the milk the calf takes will bring more before being made into veal than afterwards. As a rule it does not pay milkmen to raise or fat their calves, or would not if good cows could be easily found and purchased. With butter-makers the case is dif ferent. They have plenty of skim med milk to be disposed of in some way, and if they are breeding a good strain of dairy stock they may gener ally do well by raising their calves either for .heir own d...

WASHINGTON'S birth-day was more generally observed throughout the country Tuesday than ever before. em aw JUDOS DILLON is to charge the jury in the Babcock case to-day. The aaxt thing will be the verdict. THE St. Paul Dispatch thinks there will be "more railroad building in Minnesota in 1876 than during the last four years combined." THE 'ndications contiuue to favor the belief that the Indian Bureau will be transferred to the War De partment, where it should be. IT is no credit to the Republican Senate that it delays so long in re pealing the unjust postage bill of last session, while the Democratic House took action weeks ago. MR.
