Untitled [Newspaper Article] — Sausalito News — 15 October 1885

It is stated on very good authority that it is the intention of a gen - tleman from San Francisco to erect gas works here if sufficient encouragement is given by our citizens. This is an opportunity for Sausalito to show whether her advancement is forced on her by strangers and chance or whether she really strives for herself in the march of progress. Gas will be found very little dearer than coal oil, and what a vast difference in the convenience and beauty of the light. Besides the line appearance given to our business places by the gaslight, a few very necessary street lights might be also afforded by our town. Tine sad feature of the Crocker iirc ih not the loss of property, but the sacrifice of life. In its Fird Department this city Ims a band of heroes whose perils and services are but too lightly appreciated. At any hour liable to be called on to f;uv danger and death, there is in all their record no instance of cowardi. . W« properly weave ehapk't* to the memory of men who f...

MILITARY. [Newspaper Article] — Sausalito News — 15 October 1885

MILITARY. The Captain of the Companies of the Fifth Regiment were called in meeting by Col. Ranlett last Friday and among other things decided to abolish the cross belts. The boys will not hereafter be hitched up in leather hands like a horse, and with the freedom and comfort will be likely to do better work. It was also decided that a board of officers should be organized to meet for discussing the general welfare of the various companies of the regiment. This is a good move and will tend to the mutual advantage of the companies and the harmony of the 'Dandy Fifth'. Company E, of Santa Rosa, the cadet company of the Fifth, is being fitted out with a fatigue uniform, the blouse and Kersey pantaloons. costing $11.50 a set. The belts will be the latest regulation army garrison belt. The drill corps of Company D San Rafael have advanced to such proficiency under Captain Lauck's special drilling, that another corps of those not specially drilled will probably be formed in order that the...
