Smith took 222 votes and incumbent Henry Schuyler totalled 234 to be elected councilmen. The Bastrop 1SD election saw more com- petition. with a total of 623 votes cast. All three incumbents standing for election to another three-year term won handily: Verlin Callahan took Place 5 with 55%; Clyde Clardv won Place 7 with 60%; and Hubert Linenberger ran unopposed for Place 6. In terms of actual votes cast, Verlin Callahan's 332 defeated Barbra Turner's 184 and B. L. Parker's 91. Linenberger polled 493, with six votes cast for write-ins. Johnny Coggin. a tool pusher or foreman for the Southland Drilling Company now. drilling in Smithville. explained that they didn't really know what to expect. Geologists took seismic re- cordings which gave some indication of oil. The large oil drilling rig that was located outside of Smithville has now been moved to the Rosanky high- way seven miles out of HELLO DpWN THERE! -- Stephen Griffin climbs the der- rick periodically to make sure everything's secure.
