dossier Big cast bites into Blueberry Acclaimed Hong Kong director and Cannes Film Festival jury head Wong Kar Wai, the man responsible for one of the most critically lauded gay-themed films of the 1990s, "Happy Together," has generated so much respect from English-speaking actors that assembling a cast for his first English-language film must have been like being set loose in a candy store. For that proj- ect, an ensemble romantic come- dy currently titled "My Blueberry Nights," Wong has chosen Grammy-win- ning singer Norah Jones as his star. She'll play a young woman travel- ing across America in search of love, meeting unusual characters along the way. Joining Jones will be Rachel Weisz, Jude Law, Natalie Portman, Ed Harris and possibly Kevin Spacey, who's reportedly close to signing on. The results are sure to be sweet. Although the measure was turned down, support was up by 5.2 percent this year. Distinctive Neighborhoods. a discussion with James Odle, co-founder of the Dallas chapter of Strength in Numbers, about how to raise public awareness about the local group and the Resource Center's support pro- gram. "He was all for it, and we started planning," Pond said. Odle said he was in favor of holding the mixer because of the success of similar mixers spon- sored by other Strength in Numbers chapters. "They've had a good turnout," Odle said. "I thought we'd just see how the dating thing works here." Odle said about 15 people have agreed to attend the Dallas event so far. Pond said the Resource Center would have more of the mixers, even if the first one fails to draw a crowd. The mixers may become a quar- terly or semi-annual event, he said. "We'll try again," Pond said. Strength in Numbers is an online social net- work for HIV-positive gay men, with chapters located in 24 U.S. cities, Canada, Australia and the United Kingdom. "It's something we need to remind people of in case we have a grievance." Webb said he was especially grateful for Suhm's participation in the panel discussion because she is the top administrative official in city government. "It's a very big deal," Webb said. "She's a longtime friend and supporter of the GLBT com- munity. It's a wonderful statement for her to come out to the community center." Webb said it is important for GLBT people to know their rights. "People need to come and learn about the past and appreciate the present to see a brighter tomorrow," Webb said. "Knowledge leads to empowerment and empowerment leads to change." The panel is being sponsored by the gay alliance's Don Baker Education Fund. national news 25th anniversary evokes recollections of early horror Reports of small groups of gay men dying of unusual afflictions began surfacing in 1981; death toil now stands at 25 million By Bob Roehr Contributing Correspondent "T was sitting in my office at Nil I reading the article on five gay men in Los Angeles who pre- sented with Pneumocystis pneumonia, and felt a bit uncomfortable about it," says Dr. Anthony Fauci, recalling the first article about a mysteri- ous new disease that would eventually become known as AIDS. The article appeared in Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report on June 5, 1981. As the numbers of people afflicted grew, Fauci became both horrified and fascinated by the emerging infection. By the fall, "I changed the entire direction of my research to study this very unusual disease. Many of my mentors said I was making a career-destroying choice," he said. They couldn't have been more wrong. The decision put Fauci at the center of what "explod- ed into one...

3 states highest courts hear arguments on gay marriage New York, Washington and New Jersey justices simultaenously consider whether marriage is a fundamental right of all couples By Ann Rostow Contributing Writer For the first time in history, the highest courts in three states have taken the subject of gay mar- riage equality under advisement and are simulta- neously considering their decisions. On Wednesday, New York's highest court, the Court of Appeals, heard over two hours of oral arguments in four coordinated same-sex mar- riage cases. As the justices begin to deliberate in Albany, their counterparts in Washington and New Jersey are also preparing what could be momentous opinions. Washington's court heard oral arguments in March 2005, while New Jersey's justices were briefed last February. The New York justices peppered attorneys on both sides of the marriage cases, playing devil's advocate with lawyers from Lambda Legal Defense, the American Civil Liberties Union, the New Yor...

President signs bill banning funeral protests Associated Press ARLINGTON, Va. — President Bush passed a startling sign on his Memorial Day drive into the burial grounds for thousands of military dead — "Thank God for dead soldiers," it read. Bush took action Monday in hopes that no more families see similar sentiments when they bury loved ones who died in the war. Bush signed the "Respect for America's Fallen Heroes Act," which was passed by Congress in response to the activities of a Kansas church group that has staged protests at military funerals around the country. The group claimed the deaths symbolized God's anger at United States for tol- erating gays and lesbians. Church members' actions sparked outrage among grieving families and lawmakers. The new law bars protests within 300 feet of the entrance of a national cemetery and within 150 feet of a road into the cemetery. This restric- tion applies an hour before until an hour after a funeral. Those violating the act would face...
