JubMcription PrU• #*.©• Par r*mr, Strictly In Jtdvancm A PUBLIC NUISANCE. The rains during the summer have presented another problem to the City fathers. The water has been standing in holes along the gutters and the result has been more like hog wallows than streets of a city. In places the stench from these filthy spots goes up to heaven. Most of the the holes have been made by allowing horses to remain hitched for hours at a time or even all day. The city had an ordinance to prevent all-day hitching but no ef- fort was made to enforce it until last week when anti-hitching signs were tacked up. This question of hitching in main street is 'pestiferous'. Shall the city deny a farmer who has come to town to tra...

The Hereford Brand Vol. 6 HEREFORD. TEXAS. August 28, 1908 No. 29 ESCAPES FROM JAIL Two County Boarders Quietly Leave Tbeir Quarters Thru an Open- ing in the Wall. Last Saturday night, during the stillness of midnight hour, two of the county's jail wards got busy in the 1 "run-a-round" and extracted enough brick from under the window sill to j make an opening large enough for | their bodies, tied a blanket to the j bars and let themselves down to the j ground. Each then took his own! method to make good his escape. Boykin who was awaiting the action of the grand jury and who was charged with horse stealing started for the cap rock, in the western part of the county. He made slow pro- gress and, no doubt, hid in some of the draws on Sunday and did a little foraging Sunday night. Sometime Monday, he met Avis Kirkpatrick who was coming into Hereford and they traded clothes without Avis' consent or wish. This bit of trading on the part of Boykin was the begin- ning of his undoing, for w...

The Hereford Brand, Friday, August 28, 1908 £É§ Tucker Automatic Windmill The Tucker Automatic Wind Mill is made altogether on different principles from other mills. The wheel bearing the blades faces the current of the wind at all timet and remains at right angles to the vane which is fastened rigidly to the mill in such a way as to help hold up the weight of the wheel. The entire weight of the mill rests upon two main shaft bear- ings, being almost perfectly balanced. The wheel is not thrown around to the side of the vane, as with other mills, in order to stop revolving. The operative action is controlled by a governor which regulates the action of the blades and the wheel does not stop running only when the edges of the blades are turned to the wind. The wheel comprises a relatively fixed steel ring with blades pivotally secured thereto, and a second movable ring, equal in diameter to the fixed ring and to which the blades are also pivotally secured; two lever arms connecting the...
