ALEXANDRA OUTPLAY YEA. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra Standard and Yarck, Gobur, Thornton, Taggerty and Acheron Express — 25 May 1951

ALEXANDRA OUTPLAY YEA. Alexandra broke the ice last Satur day- at the expense of Yea, when, in what had been a close scoring game for three quarters. They came away in the last quarter to win comfortably by 26 points. Although Yea took the lead b:y -_5c :t rhortly after the last quarter began. A.----.'a complete. ly aomilnatcd the ruck, and with its little men swarming' everywhere a burst of four goals made the game safe. They played as a team all day, and their finishing burst was certainly a tonic to their supporters. " Jim Bruce, playing his first game, and, stationed at center half-forward, was the first to shine, with good clean handball, and a beautiful mark pulled down from the clouds. Ray Harkins took a nice stab pass from Lyn Stillman, to bring up first goal. Darviniza was quickly into his stride, but grubbed his first few drops. It was quite apparent that the um pire's pet rule was "throwing the ball" and he gave free kicks to both sides for what looked like clean punch es...

Local Juvenile Equestrienne Consistent Winner. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra Standard and Yarck, Gobur, Thornton, Taggerty and Acheron Express — 1 June 1951

Local Juvenile Equestrienne Consistent Winner When presenting the trophy for the, Senior Riding Competi tion at the Heaiesville Juvenile Gymkhana on Wednesday last, the organisers Mrs Gavan Duffy and Miss Madden, said it was very pleasing to see Jacqueline Payne, who has been a regular attendant at these gymkhanas since their inception, again to the fore. They recalled that Jacqueline's first appearance was five years ago when she rode that dear lit tle pony, Nugget, to victory in the junior event. Her consisteny at shows, in cluding the Royals, has always been displayed; for whilst com peting at the Sydney Roy~al dur ing Easter last, she was seldom unplaced and had the pleasure of obtaining honors in two jumping competitions, one being the under 17 event. Jacqueline's most exciting mo ment, however, amongst horses was recently, when one of her pony mares had a pretty little filly foal with a silver tail and mane. She is planning its educa tion now, and hopes it will win many prizes...

ALEXANDRA CLUB CHATTER. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra Standard and Yarck, Gobur, Thornton, Taggerty and Acheron Express — 1 June 1951

ALEXANDRA CLUB.CHATTER. The load of firewood was auctioned by Charlie. Cooper, and after some spirited bidding was knocked down to Mr. Bill Whiting for £17/10/-. He just beat John Pollock by a nose. Those to be thanked for this wood are Mr. Col Chisholm, who donated it; Bernie Smith, who, using his modern portable saw plant, crosscut it into lengths for the cost of the petrol only; Lyn Stillman, who carted it, and Charlie Cooper, who auctioned it both gratis; and, of course, the mem bers of the social committee who did the axe work. Mr. Herb Stapleton has donated a wether to the club, which should bhing in a few bob. The cordial which the players drink at the intervals has had to be pur chased by the club only once in four games this season. On two occasions it has been donated by Darmody's Hotel, and once by McNair's Hotel. - Our thanks go to Mrs. R. McLeod, who has been doing a wonderful job for the social committee. I'm told she could sell hot pies in Hades. The pie social held i...

FOOTBALL. BROADFORD BEAT ALEXANDRA. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra Standard and Yarck, Gobur, Thornton, Taggerty and Acheron Express — 1 June 1951

BROADFORD BEAT ALEXANDRA. Broadford beat Alexandra last Sat. urday, mainly because they handled the greasy ball better and kicked straighter. They adapted themselves to conditions which did not favor good football, and used the kick off the ground to advantage, whereas many of our players persisted in trying to pick up the ball. Had Alexandra taken advantage of the wind in the first quarter the re sult probably would have been differ. ent. Two' schools of thought exist in this direction, of course, but in my opinion a "bird in the hand is worth two in the bush." No man can fore tell that the wind which is blowing in the first quarter will still be blowing in the last; the Euroa match proved this. A dry ball and a fresh team can do more with the wind than a tired team with a wet, heavy ball. Broad. ford proved this. Jimmy McNair, playing his first game for the season, was quickly un :der notice with his good, heady dis posal of the ball.: Bradley, from a free in the pocket, hit the p...

THORNTON-ACHERON VALLEY DEFEAT SEYMOUR. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra Standard and Yarck, Gobur, Thornton, Taggerty and Acheron Express — 1 June 1951

THORNTON-ACHERON VALLEY DEFEAT SEYMOUR. Thorntori returned to winning vein when,, on Saturday, they defeated Seymour in a tense, hard fought strug gle. The?gaim was marred by the heavy -ground, .and when light rain fell, making the ball very greasy, good football was out of the question. Thornton won mainly, through their ability to match Seymour with good, hard. bustling-play; "which upset the visitors and never at any time allowed them to settle into systematic foot ball. A feature of the play was the shocking kicking for goal, when out of 40 scoring kicks only 11 were majors. Also, the grand ruck duels between the two coaches-Smith, of Seymour, and Greenlands. These players gave a grand exhibition of football. Greenlands won the toss and elect ed to kick with the wind. Thornton, with a new line-up,' had Rogers on the forward line, where he had taken the place of Symons, who has been cleared to Yea. Rogers' play through out was outstanding. Thornton imme diately attacked, and firs...
