Mark Twain on Insurance. [Newspaper Article] — Northern Territory Times and Gazette — 27 March 1875

Mark Twain on Insurance. At a dinner given by the insurance   men in Hartford, on the 15th October, to Mr. Corneilus Walford, the famous English insurance author, who was then on a visit to America, the speech of the evening was thus made by Mark Twain, who was present in the character of a Director in a life Insu- rance Company:-Gentlemen—I am glad indeed to assist in welcoming the distinguished guest of this occasion to a city whose fame as an insurance centre has extended to all lands, and given us the name of being a quadruple band of brothers working sweetly hand in hand, the Colt Arms Company making the destruction of our race easy and convenient, our life insu- rance citizens paying for the victims when they pass away, Mr. Batterson perpetuating their memory with his stately monuments, and our five insu- rance comrades taking care of their hereafter. I am glad to assist in welcoming our guest—first, because he is an Englishman, and I owe a heavy debt of hospitali...

Northern Territory Times. PALMERSTON: SATURDAY, MAR. 27, 1875. [Newspaper Article] — Northern Territory Times and Gazette — 27 March 1875

Northern Territory Times Palmerston: Saturday, Mar. 27, 1875. The District Council of Palmerston is in the unfortunate position of being in a state of insolvency, without having the privilege accorded to every impecunious private person of getting whitewashed. No kind Commissioner of Insolvency will grant it a certifi- cate, even of the third class, and nothing can wipe out its liabilities except payment. In considering the present painful position of the Council, we must recall the circumstances under which it was formed some four- teen months ago. The state of the settlement then was exactly that of a gold rush on the decline, whilst every- one indulged in the most sanguine belief that it was only a temporary check to the tide of prosperity which was surely to follow. We well remem- ber the glorious visions of a brilliant future, which unfolded themselves before the dazzled imaginations of each sanguine prospector. Visions of boundless wealth, and the thousand pleasures which mone...

Randall v. Tuxford. TO THE EDITOR. [Newspaper Article] — Northern Territory Times and Gazette — 27 March 1875

Randall v. Tuxford. TO THE EDITOR. Sir-In your issue ot the 6th inst. you have an article referring to the late Larrakeeyah case, and in which the defendant is held blameless with the exception of slight carelessness. Now as my name was brought up in Court, and there are always two sides to a story, it will be only just to give the other, as there are cer- tainly some guilty persons in the transaction. I do not write this endeavouring to prove any particular person guilty, but simply in justifica- tion of some who have had no oppor- tunity of refuting the false statements that were made at the trial. Mr. W. W. Tuxford and George Wil- liams both swear that when they opened the box of specimens (they being the only two present) there was one parcel marked 46 and 47 from the Larrakeeyah claims. In the middle of October, 1872, I sent the box of specimens from Y .un Creek by Westcott's team directed to George Williams, and which left Palmerston by the Bengal on the' 30th October. Applica...

Bull Fights.—Disgraceful Scenes. [Newspaper Article] — Northern Territory Times and Gazette — 3 April 1875

Bull Fights.-Disgraceful ¡Scenes. The South Pacific Timesy published at Callo, Peru, on a late date, reports that a bull fight took place the day previous (Sunday) in that city, in which a Chinaman and two women took part. Previous to the appear- ance of these performers, however, two ot three bulls were brought out, and worried for halt an hour each. One was slowly tortured to death, after being stabbed in about twenty different places, but the other two, after undergoing the same process, refused to die, and were driven bleeding and wearied, back to the yard. The fourth was a celebrated bull, and the Chinaman took par- ticular good care to keep far enough from it to prevent damage to either party. At last the chief attraction of the day appeared. A chola woman on horseback took her position in the centre of the arena to " receive" the bull, as it is termed on his being let loose. She did receive him, but in a way she had not expected. The whole affair was over in a minute. Directl...

Northern Territory Times. PALMERSTON: SATURDAY, APRIL 3, 1875. [Newspaper Article] — Northern Territory Times and Gazette — 3 April 1875

Jtotltltcp S^rritorg SHinus. PALMERSTON : SATURDAY, APRIL 3,1875. WE regret to hear that the public crushing plant recently erected at the Union at a great expense is languish- ing for work, and that the enterprising proprietors are likely to be serious losers in consequence. It is not many months ago that an imposing adver- tisement appeared in our journal setting forth the great need of a quartz-crushing battery to develop the immense resources of the Union and Lady Alice reefs, and pledging the leaseholders on the above lines to support any capitalists who might be disposed to erect the requisite ma- chinery for extracting the precious metal from its matrix. The names appended to this announcement looked so well and so substantial on paper that we were not surprised to find at least one firm coming- to the rescue of so much untold wealth. The want of the Territory was not gold-of that there was abundance at the " Union" -but it was unfortunately mixed up with quartz, and therefor...

A Perilous Feat. [Newspaper Article] — Northern Territory Times and Gazette — 3 April 1875

k Perilous Peat. Paul Boynton, a somcwh-a't noted pearl-diver of Atlantic City, is soon to go to New York to make arrange- ments for what may reasonably be termed a hazardous undertaking. C. S. Merriman, of ^cw YtVrk, the patentee of the life-dress, has offered 500 dollars to Mr. Boynton to make a sea voyage in his suit, in order to demonstrate to the public its me rits as a life-preserver. He has accepted the proposal, and on or abotit the 25th of September he will be carried from New York by an outward bound steamer to a distance of not less than two hundred miles from land, when he will be dropped and left to the mercy of the waves until he shall meet a passing vessel. He will carry with him in a rubber bag sufficient rations, consisting ot dried meats, &c, tor one week, as well as a good quantity of fresh water. He will also carry signal lights and flags, with a sectional staff 12 feet long tor raising them ; all cf which are to be stowed away in the unlimited portals of...
