JERILDERIE FARMERS' UNION. Judging by tlio gathering of conditional purchasers, homestead selectors and settlement lessees who assembled in the Mechanics' Institute here- on Wednes day evening last, we think the time op portune- now for tho formation of a Farmers' Union in this district; ]3e sid'es the object which brought them together on that occasion there are very many other important matters affecting tho interests of the agriculturalists and graziors- whichi can be better, attended to- by themselves alone than- by -any i outside body.. For instance there are the graiii duties, the co-operation of farmers, tho rents on Crown lands, the i opening of roads, the construction of post oflices and schools in convenient centres of population in the country, the ] i excavation of tanks or the sinking of i' wells along the roads for tho public, tho I building of bridges, the running of mail ] services, and a host of other matters. THE JUGGLERY OF THE FAKIRS. [Newspaper Article] — Jerilderie Herald and Urana Advertiser — 3 February 1899

THE JUGGLERY OF THE FAKIRS. Hindostun has always been regarded as tho home of tlio juggler, and, from the hour when Europeans first established an intercommunication between oast and west, the most marvellouB talos have been related of the wonderful arb with which the Indian fakirs and conjurers hnve deceived tho sight and baflied tho intelligence of every one who has witnessed the display of thoir skill. Ono of tho earliest accounts we have in modern times of Hindoo jugglery was brought to England by some of the members of a deputation sent, in 1015, to the Mogul Emperor, Jelmngiro. A company of Ben gal conjurers was called upon to ontertain tho Europeans, and they performed trick after trick of the most amazing descrip tion, to the ontire confusion of tho visitors. A bow and quiver of stool-pointed ^ shafts wore produced by one of the party, who shot an arrow porperidicularly into the air, and apparently it became fixed in space at a considerable height. Another and anothor was se...

"THAT IS THE ORDER." [Newspaper Article] — Jerilderie Herald and Urana Advertiser — 3 February 1899

'THAT IS_THE ORDER.' The sceues which attended the suppression of the Parisian Commune iu 1871 were comparable in their horror to the bloody episode of the b'rench devolution in the last decade of the last centur?. Hundreds of men and boys who, ^scarce-know- ing what they did, or, in the general confusion, te what force or agenoy their allegiance wus really due, had joined the lately triumphal)1 Commuue, were led out upon the plain of Satory, ruthlessly shot down by files of th- soldiers of the New Republic, and buried in a common trench. This terrible period, however, was not with out its humane incidents. Here is the story of one of these. The order had been issued by the new Repub lican authorities that Communist insurgents who were taken with arms in their hands should be put to death immediately. Tho ordec* was being relentlessly executed when, in the garden of the Elysee Palace, a de tachment of Republican troops came upon a small band of armed insurgents. Among them was a boy...

Urana. January 31. [Newspaper Article] — Jerilderie Herald and Urana Advertiser — 3 February 1899

Urana. January 31. The weather can only be described as terrible. There is no sign of a further break-up, and the last downpour seems to have done very little good, as no increase is perceptible in the creek or tanks about here. Tho ground is too hard for farmers to com mence ploughing. Altogether, there is a dark look-out for the coming season, and it is hard to guess how it will end. The town and district have the appearance of a desert. A meeting of the Urana Progress Commit tee was held yesterday. Present — Mr. T. Smith (chair), Dr. Macknight, and Messrs. W. Ashford, W. Culley, and John Wise (sec retary). The minutes of the previous meet ing were read and adopted. The following correspondence was rrad : — From Under Secretary and Commissioner of Roads, acknowledging receipt of letter re water supply for Urana from the Colombo Creek. From the secretary Clear Hills Progress Association, dated 1st October, 189S, asking the Urana Society to assist them in getting tho railway extende...
