BOOKMAKER-USURERS. HOW CUNNING PENCILLERS OUTWIT THE GAMING ACT. [Newspaper Article] — Werribee Shire Banner — 19 June 1913

, BOOKMAKER-USURERS. HlOW CUNNING PENOILLIIRS OUT WIT THN GAMING ACT. It is the habit of most people to B look upon the bookmaker as one into 1 whose coffers money falls in a con tinual torrent, and to regard oven the "smallest" of that fraternity as a man of considerable wealth. The - general public is not prone to con sider the disadvantages under which the penciller labours. 3 The bookmaker is-with the possible Sexception of the doctor-the business 3 man who has to write oil the great - est number of "bad debts." The rea son why the doctor loses so much money is that, although it is not by any means unlawful, it is hardly con sidered "the thing" to sue for his bill. The bookmaker has even strong er reason. Ho knows full well that it is not the slightest use putting legal machinery in motion to "recover ," 1 because the debtor will at once seek the protection of the CGaming Act. The law (whether it is, or is not, a a "bass" need not be discussed hero) t takes no cognizance of bett...

PROTECTING THE VOLUNTEERS. [Newspaper Article] — Werribee Shire Banner — 19 June 1913

PROTEOTING THE VOLUNTEERS. Here is a once familiar story of the younger Pitt which may bear re-tell ing for the present generation. Thei solemn and stiff-necked statesman had his moments of ironic humour. When England was threatened by a French invasion in 1802, there was a great many volunteer soldiers enlist ed. But the articles of enlistment guarded these volunteers very care fully against too much fighting. They were not to take the feld "ox cept in case of actual invasion." They were not to be put on war rations "except in case of actual invasion." They were not to be drilled hard "ox cept in cnes of actual invasion." When Pitt reoad these articles be frowned. Finally, on towards the end of the document, he came to a pro vision that under no circumstances were the volunteers to leave the country. Here ha lost patience, and, sofzing a pens he adhed to the pro vision the clause : "Except in case of actual invasion.'

AN ELEPHANT DENTIST. [Newspaper Article] — Werribee Shire Banner — 19 June 1913

AN ELEPHANT DENTIST. An elephant at the Riversdale Zoo (Canada) acts as its, own dentist. A short time ago it pulled a tooth out which had been bothering it, the operation being witnessed by a num her of persons who were watching the animal at the time. It appeared to be in pain, and worked its trunk round to its mooth as though to dis lodge something unpleasant. At lhst, after moving its trunk frantically, the animal drew some thing from its mouth. It cast the tooth thus extracted out of the en closure. Tho molar was large, and had evidently broken oil in the gum, so all the root did not come?'"bt. The crown was in a good state of pr.?er vation, but there were signs of deesa lower down.
