SOME FEDERAL PROBLEMS! [Newspaper Article] — The People and the Collectivist — 6 October 1900

SOME FEDERAL PROBLEMS ! Comrade J. 0. Moroxey spoke on the above subject on Sunday night last. In opening he im pressed upon Socialists the neces sity of fully studying the Federal Constitution and to realise its ?vast importance to the future de . velopment of Australian indus trial conditions, for, while never ceasing to continue the xincom promising attitude we have as sumed and the class-nature of the struggle we are engaged in, it is essential that we have a clear and full conception of Australian ? politics and industrial questions. He touched upon the tariff ques tion and the many interests which surround it, and said that as it was to be uniform, the wages and hours of all Australian workers who will come under the Federal authority should also be similar in each state. Capitalism Destroys the Family. [Newspaper Article] — The People and the Collectivist — 6 October 1900

Capitalism Destroys the ? - Family. AMONG other war news, re ports of increased enlistments in fhe army,' etc., comes the story of wives looking from lost huB bands in the recruiting offices. These incidents are distinctly typical of fully developed capi talism. Generations ago at an earlier stage of capitalist develop ment, the press-gang was an in stitution which wiveB and sweet hearts dreaded. It broke up families by pressing the young husbands into the army. Physi cally and brutally it kipknapped and slaughtered him. The capitalist system still uses the press-gang to break up the families. But it has discarded the old form and method. No longer does it send out a gang of ruffians to force the husbands into service in the army. It makes him break up his own family. Instead of the prick of the bayonet, it is the prick of hunger which, urges him to abandon wife and children and enter the army, where food is assured him. Heartsore and weary from that most exhausting of all toil : th...
