A MIDNIGHT CALLER. [Newspaper Article] — The Wyalong Star and Temora and Barmedman Advertiser — 22 January 1895

A MIDNIGHT CALLER. On Monday evening (says the Albnry Daily News) information was received by the police of somewhat, singular conduct hy a man who has not beeu apprehended. From what, cau be gathered by the police, it seems that the one man made, a series of calls on various residents on Sunday night without being iuvited. The first call appears to have been made at the house of ^Irs. Cuiiimings, at tbe lower end of Townsend-street. Here the man entered a room occupicd by the girl, who was asleep at the time. She was . awakened, however, hy the surreptitious visitor placing his ; hand over her month. Being greatly alarmed, the girl, screamed, tbe household was moused, and the man made his escape. He was seen, indistinctly as lie made his retreat, but could not be accurately described. Mr.': T. PJammer'n Ivy Tree Farm, was the next place visited. Here, too, ihe man entered a room occupied by the girl, bnt he' wis heard and again bolted before a clear view of httu could be teeured. I...

A SAMARITAN CLUB. (To the Editor of the Wyalong Star.) Sir,. — Under the above heading a sub leader appears in your last issue, advo eaf-iig tlie formation of a Club, or So ciety, to raise a permanent fund for tbe a],leviatipnpf distress hi our midst. No better suggestion could lbe possibly made a.t the present juncture. Within the last two or three days the writer has seen some eases of appalling misery 011 the field ; one case in particular might be placed side by side with G. It. Sims' most harrowing tale of misery in. the London slums without losing by com parison one tittle ot' its sliuddersome horror. Iu this particular case two lives have already been sacrificed on the aitar of human callousness — or care lessness—and one more life aud an in tellect bid fair to follow. Before pro ceeding any farther, let 1110 say that 1 do not desire to lay the responsibility of any such occurrence on the shoulders of any individual, or sot of individuals. So ciety is to blame; the whole rott...
