Duck River Notes. [Newspaper Article] — Wellington Times and Agricultural and Mining Gazette — 6 May 1891

Duck River Notes By Quack! Quack!     The small excitement produced by the election of Road Trust members has subsided, and albeit there is some dissapointment at not having a local man returned, the general feeling prevails that the successful candiates are thoroughly reliable men who may be trusted to look well after the interests of the whole district. I say "small excitement" advisedly for only about twenty took sufficient interest in the matter to record their votes ! The fact speaks for itself, and shows that the oft-repeated strictures passed on us for apathy in all public affairs is   not without a substantial foundation. I am glad to be able to say, however, that the said apathy appears to have its limits, as a very livel public meeting was held at the Temperance Hotel the other night, at which was discussed the feasibility of holding a regatta. Although perhaps rather late in the season for such a departure the idea was taken up warml...

Black River. [Newspaper Article] — Wellington Times and Agricultural and Mining Gazette — 6 May 1891

BLACK RIVER 'Toddles,' said my better half to me the other evening, ' How is it we never see a word about our doings in ' The Wellington Times? Now, there's always something about Stanley, Boat Harbour, Duck River, and nearly everywhere else, but not one word about Black River. I really believe that Mr. Editor doesn't know there is such a place, or he'd say something about us. Why don't you write, Toddles, and ask him what he means by leaving us out in the cold in this shameful manner! It's too bad, so it is; and   I'd tell him so, too. if could only see him.' ' My dear Mrs. Toddles,' said' I (adjusting my spectacles the better to judge of the state of the family barometer), -don't get out of temper— (she is subject to it)— the best thing you can do is to write to Mr. Editor himself. I know him to be a very polite gentleman, I am sure he will pay   every attention to your epistle. In fact, he'll put in a whole page of news rather than offend anyone. 'Toddle...

TUE interest which Is being evinced In the forthcoming election for Wellington Is very gnitlfyiugund shows that electors arc waking up to the great Importance attaching to the same. In fact, throughout thu colony more than ueual interest is being displayed in the elections, which is mainly due to the Pay ment of Members Hill passed last session (introduced by Mr. C. 11. M. V'cnton) In ducing a large number of candidates to come forward. Tile candidates for the suffrage of the electors of Wellington have held meeting* In various parti of the district which have bucn numerously attended, and the expressions of approval of the views of cli givo grounds for assuming that the contest will bo keen.
