JUSTICES AND JUSTICE. [Newspaper Article] — The Hay Standard and Advertiser for Balranald, Wentworth, Maude... — 14 January 1880

JUSTICES AND JUSTICE. During the hearing of the charge against Alfred Bishop at the Quarter Sessions yesterday afternoon, Air Rogers referred to the number of trumpery cases that are sent up ircin the police court for trial at the Quarter Sessions. The learned gentleman expressed his opiniou that mnny committals should not be made ; also that cases wlikh tvc-re often sent up to the higher tribunal should have been dealt with by the magistrates, iur Kogers concluded his remarks on the subjects ty pointing out that the incon siderate conduct of magistrates causes a large number of jurors and witnesses to waste such valuable time, while it entailed great and un necessary expense on the State. While Mr Rogers was speaking, a juryrasn who had heen in attendance for several days, cried out, ' Hear, hear. ' The remarks of the Crown Prosecutor ?were so true and pertinent that his Honor allowed the interruption to pass unnoticed.

THE REVENUE. [Newspaper Article] — The Hay Standard and Advertiser for Balranald, Wentworth, Maude... — 14 January 1880

THE REVENUE. 1 ; j The abstract of revenue receipts and expenditure for the quarter and year ending tbe 3 let ultimo was published on Tuesday. Both show a decrease — that on the quarter being larger than was expected, the receipts for the quarter were Ll, 249,839, a decrease of I»291,575 as compared; with the last three months of 1$78. ' The Customs yielded L296,539, oat of a tot^l bf 011- 173 received on account of taxation. From land only. Jj381,732 wail obtained,' atidin this item jalone there has been a falling off of nearly L438,700. In the aggregate receipts are included L18,373 derived (from the International Exhibition, and this amount, having been taken credit for, makes the actual defici ency really more than it' appears So also does it help' to change the figures for the year. The total 1 receipts for that period were L4,481,665, as against L4,99l,919v a deficiency of L5 10,253. This, we i need hardly say, has arisen from the! falling off in the land revenue which in 1878...

THE NORTHERN TERRL TORY. The following is portion of a re port on the Northern Territory re ceived by the Chief Secretary of South Australia from the Govern ment Resident, and published in the Adelaide papers ; — ' Palmerston, Oct. 13, 1879. ' The present population is European, about 4 1 5 ; Chinese, 2770; Malays, 30; but as the wet season is now approaching an in flux of Chinese may be expected, all of whom will no doubt find a living during the wet season on tbe gold-fields. ' Early in the month, seeing tliat there was every sign of rain, I dis charged the Chinese on relief works with the exception of a few to erect the fence around the experimental nursery at Fanny Bay. That work is now proceeding, and will, I trust, be completed by the end ot the month, when I hope to have the planting commenced. In reference to its becoming a yearly custom to grant relief on such a large scale to destitute Chinese, I have given the subject my best consideration, and I come to the conclusion th...
