THE UNEMPLOYED. PUBLIC MEETING. It having come to the know ledge of several oi the resi dents of Nambour who are numbered amongst the unem ployed that 20 unemployed men were to be brour'nt from Brisbane to perform ce± .am work in connection with the Moreton Central Sugar mill, a public meeting was hurriedly convened for Saturday night, the ' Chronicle' verandah be ing used as a platform. Mr. A. Palmer presided, and very briefly explained the object of the meeting. Mr. F. Hillman then occupied the platform for upwards of half-an-hour, and dealt with the question very well. A petition had been drawn up for signature by the residents, and was signed b}' upwards of forty persons. Mr. L. W. Wilkinrou also had a few remarks to make, and dur ing the time alloted him read the petition. At his instiga tion a resolution was carried protesting against the Govern ment sending the unemployed from Brisbane to Nambour until such' time as the local unemployed were provided for. Gold Medal Contest, Another gold medal contest under the aus;pices of the W. C. T. U. eventuated iu the Nambour Methodist church on Tuesday night, but owing to the inclemency of the weather, and the prevalence of sickness, the audience was not a large one. The Rev. T. Brassington presided, and the \ usual preliminaries being dxs- j posed of, the programme was ; entered upon. Misses Lan- ? ham, Ma}'ers and Perren very j nicely gave a dialogue ; Mrs. j Grimes, song ; and Mr. A. j Lanham, cornet solo. There were six competitors for the gold medal, the judges being j Messrs. The Frnif Industry, Recently the fruit-growers in the Woombye district met and decided that it was desirable to form a board and levy rates on the orchards in order that the}r might be kept free of disease. The Minister for Agriculture, in referring to the matter yesterday, said it was very gratifying to know that in some districts the people had such confidence in their industry as was manifested by a readiness to tax themselves to keep their orchards clean, and so secure a market for -heir fruit in other districts be sides our own. Every year there is keener inspection, and doubtless the same obtains in the old country, and as we have more than overtaken our own consumption, and have to look oversea for markets, it was of deep importance to be able to certify that fruit was free of scale and other diseases. Rifle Shooting Match. NAMBOUR, ALLORA, AND NORTH PINE. [Newspaper Article] — Chronicle and North Coast Advertiser — 8 April 1904

Rifle Slooiing Mate!). XAMBOUR, ALLOR-X, AND ; NORTH P-XE. On Friday night by the 8 '40 train, a team of riflemen arrived in Nambour, the ob ject of the visit being to fire off a match with the Allora ' and Nambour clubs. The\ were met at the railway sta tiox by Messrs. J. R. Isgar and F. M. Murtagh. and es corted to Wiuterford's Royal Hotel, where a friendly glass was partaken of. The Allora team arrived by the Gladstone mail train the same night, be in^ met at the station bv Mr W\ H. Wmterford. On Sat urday morning the three teams met on the rifle range, and the match got underway. Owing to something (?) we are unable to give the scores of the individual shootists at the various ranges, nor yet the totals, but we understand that ! the North Pine club won by j over 100 points from Nam bour, Allora being .second with a hundred to the good of Nam- j bour. The visitors left Nam bour by the evening train ap parently satisfied with their outing.

In this connection it might be mentioned that Actingser geant M'Nei'll obtained a num ber of samples' of the meats I used during the luncheon, and also a large collection of tins, from which various meats arid fruiis had been taken.

Another Successful Examinee Miss F. Taylor, of Traves ton, who is a teacher in the Eumundi State school, was notified a few days ago thztt she had passed her second ex amination with very great credit. Of the thirteen sub jects which it was compulsory to take, this studious young lady had the satisfaction of passing in all. Miss Taj'lor well deserves the credit which she has won, for she had to work early sind late, leaving her home at 7 o'clock in the morning, and not getting back before 11 :it night, hours enough to dishearten any bv-.t the most diligent.

POLICE CHANGES. Mounted Constable Chat field, who was temporarily sta tioned at Nambour, left for Brisbane on Friday morning. Constable Adams' arrived the previous Wednesday evening, he having received the per manent appointment to the Nambour Police station. Mr. Adams was, at the time of his appointment, a passenger by the Aramac when she wzs wrecked near Gladstone. He was one of the occupants of the fourth boat, and exper ienced some hours of trial that is not likely to be for gotten by him for in any years to come.

Alligator Eats a Policeman. A few weeks ago a {constable named Parker, stationed at Wyndham (W.A.) suddenly disappeared. An alligator of 1 unusually lar?e dimensions was caught a few days ago, i and on being opened the cap tors were horrified to nnd the missing policeman's tunic and other clothing, and part of human remains in its sto mach.
