THE PRICE OF MEAT. [Newspaper Article] — Bairnsdale Advertiser and Tambo and Omeo Chronicle — 12 September 1882

TIlE PRICE OF MEAT: "Paterfumilins" writes as follows to tlhu Age of Saturday on this sulbject: Sir,-The famine price to which meatt has attained has naturally aroused public attention to the extraordinary anunmoly that while our public laInds are being alienated at an annually increasing rate, and cultivation is toing rapidly extended, the necessaries of life, so far as agricul tural and ldairy products are conerned, are growing scarrer and dearer every year. Everything has been dclone for the selector. He gets his lund at a merely nominal price. Hu gets roads almost to his door, antd has his produce carried by rail to Melbourne for a tithe of what the Victorian farmer of tihe olden tine (who had to buy his laud ait auction for cansh down) had to py. What labor he employs is also paid for on a greatly reduced seale, and yet we finld that meat, butter, hacon, flour, &e., are almost every year advancingin price. ANOTHER COMET. [Newspaper Article] — Bairnsdale Advertiser and Tambo and Omeo Chronicle — 12 September 1882

ANd( TIII COE'T'. A fine comet has made its appearance in the eastern sky where it is visible from G a.m. till sunrise. It wos seen in Victoria for the first time oln the morning of tile 7th inst., by nl amateur astronomler, Mr. nBaker nt Goldsboroagl, s township oil the railway line between Maryborough and Donaldl. Its -ap proxirmate position is R.A. 9h. 28m. and dec. Odeg. Om..in the constellation Hydra. It has also been observed at sea by the chief officer of the Coraki and by the Government astronomer at Sydney. It is thought quite possible that the great comet of 1812 may reap peanr some time this year, and an epheme rilshas aIntely bee, received at the Mel bourne Observatory from Paris to facili tate the search for it, in case it should re-appear. And although the position of this comet does not agree at all closely withl that in which, according to com putation, the comet of 1812 would be found, it is still near enough to make it quite possible that the comet now re ported to...

NOTES BY THE WAY. [Newspaper Article] — Bairnsdale Advertiser and Tambo and Omeo Chronicle — 12 September 1882

NOTES BY THE WAY. (BY OUR SANDY'S CREEK CORRESPONDENT.) To those who can afford to prospect, Lower Boggy is well worth their attention, but, as the men themselves say, their pre sent find is only sufficient to show that there is gold a long way back from the creek which has been worked and reworked years ago. The State school at Lower Boggy is a very unpretentious looking building, but the interior is comfortable and commo dious-at all events for the present tax on its capaciousness, as the number on the roll is under 10. The teacher, Mr. M'Ivor, seems to be a gentlemanly, well informed young man. He courteously permitted me to examine the children, and I was truly surprised at the advanced state of his young charges, who, with the exception of four or five, were never at any other school. By this it will be seen that Mr. M'Ivor has had all uphill work, and, the present state of his school reflects the highest credit on him as a teacher. He put his pupils through an exercise in dril...

MELBOURNE GRAIN SALES. Tuesday, Leptember 12. Messrs. Everingham, Greenfield and Carter report :-Thle tone of the grain market still remains very quiet. The trade only care to operate;for small lines just now. The recent forced sales seem to have had a depressiig 'effect on the market. At the auction sales to-day very little business was done, owing to the inclination of buyers not to give late rates, and the disposition of sellers not to take less. A few lines of medium wheat have been taken up at from 5s 9d to 5s 10!d. For prime milling 7s is still required. Flour.--For this staple the demand is slow. Holders of large lines ask £14.
