THE OVERLAND ROAD. [Newspaper Article] — South Australian Register — 12 June 1841

THE OVERLAND ROAD. On Saturday last, the Committee met at the Council Room, and a deputation of' the following gentlemen waited on his Excellency : —Messrs Giles, J. B. THE FENCING ACT. [Newspaper Article] — South Australian Register — 12 June 1841

THE FENCING ACT. Tim Act, the effect of which will be imme-<*> diately felt, more or less, by every proprietor In the colony, is again before the Council; and there is some reason to suppose that it will be inunsdialely |t.-it>aed. The opportunity we have liad to glance over its provisions has beeo too brief to enable us lo form an opinion on its minor details—especially as those appeir to be enveloped in more than the ordinary amount of unnecessary verbiage. The first two clauses arc the must important, and these we subjoin. It will be observed par ticularly that the second provide* that tlio payment of fencing is only compulsory on tlie co-terminous proprietor when lie avails himself of his neighbour's improvements. This, we think, U a proper and equitable ar raugeiiient, and one to wliich do sound ob jection can be urged. In our next, we shall examine more minutely the different clauses of tie proposed measure, and state our views ti.ereou if necessary. I That fr...

THE "VILLE DE BORDEAUX." [Newspaper Article] — South Australian Register — 12 June 1841

THE "VILLE DE BORDEAUX." In another portion of to-day's paper will be found the termination of the discussion in the Supreme Court in reference to this ship; and, that no charge of partiality in the matter may be brought against us, we give at the same time the observations of our contemporaries the Chronicle and the Southern Australian. The decision of Judge Cooper, and the is- suing the writ of appraisment and delivery of the Ville de Bordeaux, bear out so completely the views we have taken throughout this foolish affair, that we need not now return to the expo- sition of the Advocate General or the Collector of Customs' law, further than to observe that the position attempted to be maintained by these gentlemen, that the ship having been seized and unclaimed for one month, was condemned, was not only demolished, but de- monstrated to be untenable by the statutes upon which they themselves relied. The Collector of the Customs, in the " knowledge of his duty, theoretically and prac...

VAN DIEMEN'S LAND. By the arrival of the Marys we have Hobart Town papers to the 25th May. We have only room for the following extracts:— AMERICAN WHALERS ON THE COAST. (From the Hobart Town Advertiser.) We some time since culled the attention of the authorities of the mother country to the numerous vessels of the French and American nations, that were visiting our coast, and actually killing whales almost within sight of our harbours. We think thut some bounty should be allowed to vessels whaling from the Colonies, according to tin.1 French pi in, no that tbc benefits of such an ex tent of coast rliould not be lost to the British Empire. The navy of Ifitgliiiiil and ber nautical superiority must cciuinly wane, if some scheme is not devised, so that the immense fisheries bounding on these 'erri touts should lie. rendered subset vitiit to th« interests of Great Urituin, in. stead of being monopolised by foreigheis. We are led to lomark this from the following extract from a Swan Rive...
