A MYSTERIOUS AFFAIR. [Newspaper Article] — The Darling Downs Gazette and General Advertiser — 2 February 1860

A MYSTEUIOUS AFFAlB. {From tkt London Ttmtt.) Our colamiM have recently been occupied by a coroner's inqnett, which reminds us more of a scene in one of the profligate novels of modern France than of what one wouli expect to take olaco iu the midst of methodical and decorous London. The Smethurst trial give us agliinpse into tbe inner life of our suburbs at whfch most of us have shuddered, and, though the charge may not assume »o serious a character, the Mile end ir.que-t brings to light disclosures scarcely ie& revolting. It seems that the Bishop of London, iu August last, received two letters signed by a parishioner, alLfpng that the Itev. Mr. Bonwdl, Incumbent of St. Phillip's Church, Stepney, had received a young lady in the school iiehtnd the church, and that s'.ie tUvre. on the 1 1 tli of August, give birth to a male c'::!-l. SPIRIT OF THE PUBLIC PRESS. PROGRESS OF THE NEW COLOST OF QUEENSLAND. {From tkt Etapirt. January 16.) It cannot be uninteresting to watch tiie pro gress of tbe new colony of Queensland. The residents appear to have recovered from their amazement at tie sight of a Governor, and are turning their attention to the serious responsi bilities of their position. At first there seemed to be some danger that the inflated affection between Sir Ovorge Bowen and his subjects would suffer .a serious collapse. It was a de cided case of 'love at first sight, on both sides ; hut all on a sudden the ancient rivalries of Brisbane and Ipswich revived, and even Ipe wicb was divided against itself- Tlie Ips wichians exhibi\ a considerable, amount cf contempt for the Address of the Briebsueites to bis Excellence, and resolved to have an Address -tf their own'; but toete they were wy nearly foiled, for a sharp attorney, whom they employed to engross the document, wound up his labours by transmitting it to...
