At the first, pcrfonnance of the Passion l'lay at New York on March 30 the theatre was crammed. Muncjpal interference was flanked by having the building consecrated for divine service, so avoiding the necessity of a licence. Martin Herman, the Victorian usurer of 1400 per cent fame, hns had to resign his position as chairman of tbe Victorian Hebrew congregation, in consequence of tlie nature of his transactions with a young ass named Petty.
