DRIVER INJURED. John White, a lorry driver, of Station street, Fairfield, was driving a lorry drawn by two horses at the level crossing about 50 yards below Broadmeadows station last night, when a train crashed into the lorry, killing one horse and seriously injuring the driver. White was later taken to the Melbourne Hospi tal by the St John Ambulance suffering from a compound fr.ct~re of the skull.

YARRA YARRA GOLF CLUB. The annual meeting of the above club was held last week when the follow lug oflicers were appointed :--President, Mr H. G. McRoberts; captain, Mr R. L. Wingrove; hen. secretary, Mr R. F. Paterson; hen. treasurer, Mr W. L. Hannah; committee, Messrs F. P. Stokes, H. Darvall, A. J. Thurgood. The hon. secretary, Mr Paterson, was presented with a cheque in recognition of his zeal in the interests of the club. Notwithstanding the dry season, con siderable progress has been made in remodelling the course, and it is expected that eight new greens and 18 new tees will be playable before the end of the comning season, £he course will then be well over 6000 yards. Some useful additions to the clubhouse have also been effected.

Under the auspirces of the above, a most enjoyable euclre party and dance was held at the residence of Mnr .\. H1. BIrewecr, "'Andembachl," Park Cresweit, Fairfiell,. on Satur.day dvcning last. Nearly 80 card phlcrs sat down. ,at thi tables, and play continued until 10 p.n., when the scores were counted. iMrs Fowler won the ladies' prize and Mr Campbell the gentlemen's prize, while Miss Curtis and Mr Holloway obtained consolation prizes. Mr Oliver l Forster, after presenting the prizes, moved a hearty vote of thanks to Mr and Mrs Brewer for their kindness in granting to the club the use of their ball-room. Tlhe motion was carried by clamation. Dancing was then indulged in, music being supplied by Mr Sturtevant. Dur ing the evening Mr Walter Howgate, sang two songs in good style.

CURIOSITY OF THE UPPER AIR. ---+-- .The reported drying up of lakes in Switzerlnnd, Germany, Russia, and Thibet has .led to the. sugges tion that the earth is becoming desiccated, and an old German theo:.) is that the ultra-violet rays of ,Sunight. are ,concerned in tie process. These rays slowly decom po:'e.-.,ater into hydrogen dioxide and hydrogen, the latter, but no oxygen, being evolved. The action taking place in the air,. hydrogen dioxide is found in rain, while the hydrogen rises, and at sixty-two miles constitutes 994 per cent. of the atmosphere. This lightest of gases, moreover, is thought to be escaping into space. Some people ao not appreciate the value of economy until the purse is empty.

Taking the place of one of the Holy Week services, Stainer's great master, piece,'" The Crucifixion," was rendered by the augmented choir of the abore church on Wednesday evening. A large congregation in the hall listened en grossed to the "old, old story" in song. The praiseworthy rendition.of this work by the choir speaks volumes for the whole-hearted endeavors of the honorary choir-master, Mr A. E. Emery, and the enthusiastic work of the choir members~ The soloists were Mr ssew$ (tRsor),'a4ij Mr McGrath (bass), Miss B. Townsend, the honorary organist, presiding st the new organ. The offertory was devoted to the purchase of this organ-a very fine instrument. It is to be hoped that the choir will continue to develop the latent power it undoubtedly possesses.
