Tito way yi which the Merino flocks wero established in Australia was somewhat romantic, , Tho Spanish ; Government retained for some time the I monopoly of Merino sheep, and the I sending of theso animals outside of the kingdom was attended with severe penalties. But between 17(35 and ISO!) on several occasions exceptinos were made as a compliment to a neighboring king or government. In 17(jr> tho Elector of Saxony was pre sented with a Hock, and in 1775 somo annuals from tho Spanish Hook of Count iScgretti weiv given to the Aus trians. The Saxon flock was estab lished at Lohmcn and gradually bred to an exquisite fineness of wool. Tho Austrians placed theirs at Hostitz anil bred for strong barrel-like bodies.
