The Hay Show. SOME EXHIBITS. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Stock and Station Journal — 4 August 1896

The Hay Show. SOME EXHIBITS. There were a good many strange exhibits at the Hay Show, and there were some familiar ones. When you go 450 miles out into the country and come across the exhibit of Jno. Baker, the cutler, from Hunter-street, Sydney, it seems to strike a home chord. He had an exhibit at the Sheepbreeders' Show in Moore Park, and here he is again, out on the Murrumbidgee. Good boy Baker ! What a show of chain ecraseurs, dissecting instruments, knives, scissors, combs, dehorners, all sorts of things. Jno. Baker is a good cutler, and he's an honest man. There's no hair in the palm of his hand, as far. as I know, but he's a real straight 'un. Then there was Simper's Scoop. Simper, of Paradise Plains. That scoop, which costs £15, was set out there in stern, cast-iron simplicity. You couldn't argue about ib, simply because there was nothing to ib bhab you could find fault wibh. Ib was made to do a certain work, and you could bet on it doing that all the time and every time. I...

Penny Postage and a Tax on Newspapers. AN IMPORTANT DECISION. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Stock and Station Journal — 4 August 1896

Penny Postage and a Tax on Newspapers. AN IMPORTANT DECISION. Last Thursday a large deputation waited on the Postmaster-General in regard to penny postage for the whole colony. The deputation was intro duced by Mr. Griffith, M.L.A., and it consisted of a large number of well known gentlemen, including Messrs. Henry Uopeland, i±. Ulark, S. Moore, J. M. Chanter, and W. T. Dick, M's.L.A. ; Messrs. Wallis, Dewsbury, Kitchen, Row, Carroll, Mills, Watkin, Pearse and others. Mr. Griffith said the object of the deputation was to ask the Minister to extend his own doctrine of Freetrade to the newspapers of the country — to raise a revenue from the postage of newspapers, and with it to reduce the inland postage on letters. The basic principle was that no class of the community should be taxed for the benefit of another, and he maintained that the people who did not read the newspapers ? The Postmaster-General : Who do no: read the ne '^papers at all 1 Is there such a class 1 Mr. Griffith : Oh...

Gossip. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Stock and Station Journal — 4 August 1896

Gossip. I Once upon a time, the camel driver I of Mecca, the mighty Mohammed, had )? a young wife named Ayesha. She asked him, one day, if he did not love : her better than his old wife. The prophet gazed on the bright eyes for a moment, and then said, '? No, by God, for when I was poor, alone and despised, she believed in me and loved me.' From that out, I became a be liever in Mohammed. His heart was in the right place. I didn'b become ' a Moslem, of course, any more than I % would become a member of the Salva | tion Army by believing in General »' Booth. But, Mohammed was a good | man, in spite of his religion, and if he 3 was a bit mad, are we not) all a bit |; mad? . Let him that is without sin ;| cast the first stone at the Prophet ! || I've lived a good deal amongst the % Moslems, and I'd sooner have a Mo ?; lem for a friend than a so-called Christian Armenian. People keep hissing at the Moslems for worrying the Armenians, but if our Australian people had to live with the Arm...

Tick I Tick ! Tick ! TO THE EDITOR " S. S. AND S. JOURNAL." [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Stock and Station Journal — 4 August 1896

Tick I Tick ! Tick ! TO THE EDITOR ' S. S. AND S. JOURNAL.' Sir,— Your ' Globe Trotter's' able and interesting article on the above subject in your issue of the 24th inst. contains much that is readable and valuable : but he will pardon me if I say that, unfortunately, it sets forth one theory which, though feasible, has been found to be incorrect. Scientitic research proves that the cattle tick is not the mere medium of carrying a disease from an infected herd to a clean one j but, from its very nature, this particular species of tick produces in cattle the fatal disease known as ' redwater,' or ' Texas Fever.' There can be very little doubt that it is this same species which infests the catile of the Elsie Stiti aa in the Northf-ru Territory, for the Queensland plagu-j is distinctly traceable to the Northern Territory. But why do not the cattle there suffer from the fever when ihey have had the ticks for years and years 1 For the same reason that in Texas and the Southern States o...

The Bible in the Bush. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Stock and Station Journal — 4 August 1896

The Bible in the Bush. There was a blatant orator onc-§ holding forth on the tariff, and he s alluded to Shylock. An auditor yelled, ' Who's Shylock 1 ' The orator paused, and, full of withering scorn, he said 'Don't vou know who Shvlock was ? Go home and read your Bible ! ' Well, I was out on the Murrumbidgee the other day, and I heard a real good Scripture story. A parson once went to live in the bush, to convert the bushies. He used to say grace at every meal, at first, but he got full up of mutton. It was sheep for breakfast, sheep for dinner, and sheep for tea. At last he just lifted the cover, looked at the tucker, and murmured ' Hebrews xiii. 8.' The servant girl said to the 'missis ' ' That's a queer man. He never prays over his tucker now. He just looks at it and sayB ' Hebrews xiii. 8.' ' The 11 missis ' was a wise woman. She looked out a Bible — there's generally one on a homestead — and she found it said— — go and look for yourselves. It's worth looking for ! We hear tha...

The Tick Pest SUGGESTIONS BY THE MOREE STOCK AND PASTURES BOARD. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Stock and Station Journal — 4 August 1896

The Tick Pest SUGGESTIONS BY THE MOREE STOCK AND PASTURES BOARD. A special meeting of the Moree Stock and Pastures Board was held on Tuesday. Mr. A. G. F. Munro, of Weebollabolla, was in the chair. The following resolution was passed, and is to be forwarded to the Minister for mines — 'That, with the view of checking the progress of the Queensland tick plague, it is absolutely necessary that all stock north of parallel 23 should be prohibited from travelling south, and all stock between parallels 23 and 26 should before travelling be dipped on the station, and again dipped on crossing parallel 26 ; also on reaching the border of the colony a run of about 20 from each draft should be placed through a crush, and minutely examined by thoroughly competent experts for ticks. If found to be clean, the drover to receive a certificate from the proper authority. The board does not favour total prohibition, as such would not only paralyse an important trade, but would also tend to laxity on t...
