An Irish Hero. [Newspaper Article] — Burra Record — 13 February 1880

An Irish Hero, 4 The Enniskilen Dagnjons, an Irish rr^aent in tbe English service, hare as grand a record ?t any similar body of men in the world. The lime of their formation dates from 1688. the year of tbe English reTolntion, when William of Orange drore JampB II. from the throne of England. The nucleus of the regiment vaa first formed of young men recuited in Fermanagh, Tyrone and Cavafl, and up to the present time contains a majority from thoee counties, and it is s *iq£niaV- fact that they make the best cavalry «nen in the British sprriee. The celebrated Charges at the Boyne, \Y aterloo, and Balaclava lire matters of history. Their descendants wer« well represented in the federal army during our late war, and rode side by side with Sheridan in many a raid and foray. But the lapst dashing trooper of them all, the boldest a,nd bravest rider th,at ever sat in the saddle Qr spurred to death with a shout of defiance ringing on his lips, was Miles, the Slasher. Police Protection. [Newspaper Article] — Burra Record — 13 February 1880

Police Protection, It will be remembered by xnost of our readers that the Burra Corporation in common with other Municipal bodies nays one-half of the cost of the police protection granted to the town, and this item reaches somewhat over £140 per annum, . ' Now it does seem to us, and. we think to all that as the town has ta pay 'this large sum they should have some power over the police officers, or, at any rate, that they should be able to secure efficient .service being rendered in return for the cash ex pended, V?e hope that the Buraa Oo.rporatio.u will join with otbeps in Sleeking to. be relieved from a burden which belongs to. the Government, but while we have ta pay, we must see that work is done for the outlay, ' : We are led to make these remarks by the fact that during the past two, cr three weeks there has been an unusual amount of drunkenness in the town, and that it has been allowed to be openly manifest to. the disgust of all beholders. Men in a state of helpless intox...

CORRESPONDENCE. AUBURN, January 14. [Newspaper Article] — Burra Record — 13 February 1880

CORRESPONDENCE. (From our own Correspondents.) AUBURN, January 14. The heat this last week has been intense, but we have a delightful change now with indica- tions of rain. The farmers have mostly done cleaning. The average this year will be moderate in this district, but not up to expectations. Our cricketers suffered a crushing defeat last Saturday at the hands of the Clare team, Mortimer's bowling being too good for the Auburn batsmen. The only batsman that showed any good form was A. Rowe who was   batting splendidly, when he was given out stumped by Bright, which was a very doubtful decision. All the spectators say he was not out, and he vows his bat was in long before the bails were off, but his innings as far as it went was evidently the best for the day as none on the ground came up to him in style, he played Mortimer with the greatest ease, and would have proved a most troublesome customer had had he not such a misfortune. Bright for the Clare made forty in a l...
