TANGO EXPERIMENT FARM. Dorset Horn For Fat Lamb Raising. [Newspaper Article] — Irrigation Record — 15 December 1915

TANGO EXPERIMENT FARM. Dorset Horn For Fat Lamb Raising. The sheep and wool expert reports: Recently the Department of Agriculture took the opportunity of making a prac tical test with a number of lambs, which were forwarded to the Sydney (Home bush) market. The lambs were raised at the Yanco Experiment Farm, and the consignment included only Dorset Horn crosses. Particulars of the sale are now published in order that breeders might see the results and so compare them with any which may have been obtained under similar conditions. For several years past the department ' has had the Dorset Horn, together with other breeds, under close observation at the various experiment farms in connec tion with crossbreeding. Previous reports already pointed to the profitableness of the breed for early lamb production, and the prices which were obtained at the re cent, sale again 'show the value of the breed for the purpose indicated. As the result of these tests, the Dorset Horn was accordingly s...

NOTES FOR THE AREAS. WENTWORTH. Dry Area Leases. [Newspaper Article] — Irrigation Record — 15 December 1915

WENTWORTH. Dry Area Leases. The whole of the blocks previously gazetted and subsequently withdrawn were, with the exception of two, which are being temporarily held back pending the consideration of the question of the use of portion of them for rffle range pur poses, re-gazetted on 8th instant, as will be seen by reference to Folios 7415-7418 of the "Gazette" published on that date. They will be available for application on 10th January and following days. PEACHES TO GROW. CLINGSTONES. (Concluded from last issue.) [Newspaper Article] — Irrigation Record — 15 December 1915

PEACHES TO GROW. CLINGSTONES. (Concluded from last issue.) It is regretted that although a large number of peaches have been planted at the Experiment Farm, practically all of which have done well, there are very few clingstones amongst them. Of the old trees there "are only two varieties which come under the head ing clingstones; these are the California Cling and the Sellar's Cling, both of which are dealt with later on. During the last few years the following varieties have also been planted:-Conkling, Gold dust, McDevitt's Cling, McKevitt's Cling, Nicholl's Grange Cling, Italian Cling. But these are not yet sufficiently advanced to warrant any definite statement . being made as to their suitability or otherwise for the district. The following notes on the clingstones, therefore, only refer to farm results, as far as'"the California Cling and the Sel lar's are concerned. The other informa tion is based on results obtained at the Hawkesbury Experiment Farm and else where. Californ...

A Simple Soil Tester. [Newspaper Article] — Irrigation Record — 15 December 1915

A Simple Soil Tester. There is in use on the vegetable experi ment plot at Leeton a very simple and effective implement for the testing of the s'dil with a view of ascertaining the per centage of moisture which it contains. Thb idea is Mr. Hogbin's (the manager of the experiment vegetable plot), who has used the contrivance with great success in connection with the work at vthe vege table farm. He would be very pleased indeed to explain its use to any settler desiring information, and to supply par ticulars as to the most satisfactory man ner of having one of these instruments made. ; In commenting on the water holding capacity of the various classes of ^oils ojn the Irrigation Areas, Mr. G. P. Darnell Smith, of the Department of Agriculture, said some time ago that the implement referred to in this note was so convenient and useful that he considered one of them should be in the hands of every settler on the Irrigation Areas. An illustration of the tester, copied from a sketch by M...

FRUIT NOTES. [Newspaper Article] — Irrigation Record — 15 December 1915

FRUIT NOTES. (By W. J. Allen.) Cultivation.-After each, watering the land should be cultivated and cross culti vated as soon as possible. In addition to this, the soil around trees and vines which cannot be stirred with a cultivator should be broken up with a fork hoe. An occa sional working of the ground is an ad vantage to keep it in good condition, even though rain' should not fall or irrigation n(ot be given, as such, a stirring will keep the weeds under, and help to maintain a proper soil mulch, which prevents an un due loss of moisture. Where couen grass is found growing it should either be ploughed up or dug out on a hot day, so that the roots may be exposed to the ray& of the sun and drying winds, which soon kill them. Thinning Fruit.-The stone fruit crop this season is, generally speaking, a good one. In nearly every orchard trees are to be found which are apt to overbear, or which carry heavy crops every alternate year, while during the off year they set very littl...

Poultry Notes. [Newspaper Article] — Irrigation Record — 15 December 1915

Poultry Notes. BY H. J. BRAUND. Incubators and Brooders.-Do not for get to thoroughly scrub out your incu bators and brooders after they are finished with for the season. Indeed, after each hatch it is a wise plan to take the pre caution. There are many microscopic diseases from which chickens may suffer and which are very difficult to treat satis factorily. Prevention of disease is all important in the poultry industry. There are many suitable disinfectants for poul try sanitation. Any of the phenyles, lysols, or other coal-tar products are suit able. Personally I have always used a 5 per cent, solution of lysol. That is to say, one part of lysol to twenty parts of the hot soapy water used for 'scrubbing out the machine. Lysol is a German name, however, and it is now necessary to obtain the same product made under a different name in allied countries. Kresapol is practically the same as lysol, and equally effective, but you will find that your dealer will be able to give you the co...

Experimental Plots. HAY TRIALS. [Newspaper Article] — Irrigation Record — 15 December 1915

Experimental Plots. HAT TRIALS. . + . * * . J » % c The. following results are submitted of experimental hay plots on Messrs. S. Alexander's block (Farm 162, Leeton) and that of Messrs. Taylor & Hawkins (Farm 67, Leeton). The figures and com ments thereunder speak for themselves. It is hoped that next year there will be more plots available for experimental work, for while it is recognised that the old established farms will now rapidly be put down with more intensive crops than hay, there is still a vast area to be opened up, and the experiments being carried out now may be of incalculable benefit to the many hundreds of new block holders still to come.
