A i§L161iT MlST/tfuE Sehrteb Cale AND WBAT GREW OUT df IT. One cool afternoon, in the early fall, I,— Chester V. Lelloy, a gentleman—stood on the platform of the Albany depot, watchhg the procession of passengers just arrived in the Hudson river boat, who defiled vpast me on their way to the cars. The Boston tram, by which I had come, waited patiently as steam and fire might, for their leisure, with ouly -occasiooal and faint snorts .of remonstrance at the delay ; yet, still the jostling crowd hurried past into the cars,, and flitted through them in search of seats. Their increased numbers at length warned me that, I might find it difficult to regain my own, and Uollowed them. '• I beg your pardon, sir V I turned, in obedience to a tonch on my arm, and saw a respectable-looking negro moo before me, who bore the travelling bag and shawl, and was evidently, theMtendant of a slender and stylish girl, behind him. " Do 1 ^ speak," he said, bowing ^respectfully, and glancing at t...

REPlTBLldAK COOimr MEET1K0. The Chairman of the Republican County Committee has called a County Meeting, on Monday evening, May 2d, for the purpose of electing delegutes ^ to the State Convention to be held at Hajrrisburg on the 8th of June.— This coarse was adopted as the best one, because there was not time for the preliminaries necessary for holding a Convention—from the fuct that such Conventions are never fully attended—and that at this time there are no in'erests or questions which excite, discussion amongst the members of the Republican par'y, and no possible chance for clashing or dissatisfaction . : Hon. G. A. Grow will be present to address the meeting, and it is expected that other able speakers'will be in attendonce. ""

"DEMOCAT10 STATS OOHVEHTJON." The For.vby branch of the Democracy, or as they style themselves, the States Bights Democracy, met in Convention at Harrisbnrg, on the Uth in pursuance of a call which received the signature of many Democrats, dissatisfied with the proceedings of the " Office Holder's Convention." The attendance was large, and the proceedings marked with enthusiasm and determination. Alex<ixdeb McKin.nev, of Westmoreland, presided, assisted by a large number of Vice-Presidents and Secretaries. A Committee was appointed to prepare an Address and Resolutions, of which Col. Fount, v was Chairman, and their report was unanimously adopted. They repudiate the late Convention, its action and its nominees ; endorse the doctrine of Popjular Soverignty ; denounce the proscription and tyranny of the Federal Administration, and uphold the State Administration. The great feature of the occasion;, was a speech by John Hickman. It is a bold and scathing^ review of the p...

The latter certainly deservrcredfrfor their flrmness afld consistency, while the noisy ones who fled when the wolf came will not stand very high in the public estimation.
