Death of James Shelton . [Newspaper Article] — New York Clipper — 11 March 1854

Death of James Shelton . JMr . James Shelton , the popular leader of Shelton s Brass Band , died on Saturday last , in the 35 th year of his ajje , after an illness of several weeks . Tjie father of Mr . Shelton , who , we believe , was the originator of the band , died a few weeks since . The great po-pi-ilarity attached to Shelton s Band is owing , in a great measure , to the efforts of Mr Shelton , who was untiring in his exertions to place the band in the front rank of musical bodies , and right well did he succeed , for the patronage they received was uo mean testimonial of thc I -ivor in whieh they are held by our Mttaens . i Play or F » y . - Wc have been asked if the race between Barlow and Horton would take • place if the weather should be unfavorable We understand . that thc match will come off , ra } n or shine , ;

SPARRING . Progreu of the Manly Ait [Newspaper Article] — New York Clipper — 11 March 1854

SPARRING . Progreu of the Manly Ait The Sparring Exhibition given by Mr . James Sullivan , a couple of months since , and which was conducted in such an orderly and systematic 1 manner , seems to have created quite a revival of this favorite and manly pastime and innocent amusement . The success which attended Mr . Sullivan s exhibition , the extraordinary attendance on that occasion , and the respectability and good standing of the greater part of that large audience , gave sufficient evidence that a love for sparring , for a display of science in the mode of using the gloves when in the hands of men skilled in the art , is not confined to merry England , but is participated in by the lively lads of Young America . . We have now been a regular attendant at these Sparring Exhibitions , and repeat , what we have asserted before , that we have aot witnessed , in connection with them , a disturbance of any kind . This , we have no doubt , Old Morality and other journalists of a like il...

To the Races ! To the Baoet !! [Newspaper Article] — New York Clipper — 11 March 1854

To the Races ! To the Baoet !! Our readers must not forget that on Monday next , 13 th inst . the one mile race between Barlow and Horton , and the quarter mile race between Williams and Dorcy , are to take place on the Union Race Course , Long Island . Already much excitement exists , and thousands who never before witnessed a foot race will repair to the Union I Course to witness the above matches . In reference to the mile race between Barlow and Horton , the friends of each man seem fully confident of success , and much money will change hands on the result . The quarter ofa mile race between Dorcy and Williams , after the race between Barlow and Horton , promises to be equally interesting , and although Williams gives Dorcy six yards start , yet it is thought the former by hard work may be enabled to go in ahead . It is impossible to form a correct opinion however as to the ultimate result of these races , as those engaged in them are all good men , and will doubtless make good...

Walking Hatch Against Time . [Newspaper Article] — New York Clipper — 11 March 1854

Walking Hatch Against Time . The Charleston Standard of Feb . 22 says : > On Monday , last took place the much talked of walking match against time . The bet being to walk six miles in fifty-seven minutes—the feat however was accomplished in the unprecedented short space of fifty-five minutes fiftysix seconds , and the walker might have saved time . The pedestrian is a young man from New York , and is of a rather slight build , but very muscular . His style of walking is probably the most fair ever witnessed . The time of the various miles , as given by the timers , was , 9 . 43 , 10 . 03 , 9 . 43 , 8 . 45 9 . 06 , 8 . 46 , thus making 55 . 56 , and the three last miles being the fastest . There is some talk about another match , to walk six miles in fifty-three minutes . The gentleman who performed the above feat returned to this city last week—he called to see us on Tuesday last and corroborated tbe facts above set forth . In addition to this match he performed two othe...
