^ Use of the Comb Foundation . James Heddon in the Bee Journal says : Our early teachings were that from eighteen to twenty-five pounds of honey must be oonsumed by the bees to enable them to produoe one pound of wax , or virgin oomb . I never believed that it took so muoh . honey , but I oould not dispute it , beoause the authorities said so , and I had made no tests ; and so we all stood by those figures . When comb foundation was ushered in , it was found to be a good thing , an economical thing , and among others of the reasons why , was the great amount of honey saved by HB use . Praotioal experienoe has oonvinoed honey-produoers that about onehalf of the above-mentioned amount of honey is all that the beeB require to build one pound of oomb . It has also proven true that with some varieties of oomb foundation and qualities of wax of whioh oomb foundation may be made , that bees will sometimes fail to utilize the oomb foundation given them , and merely taking it for a base , bu...

j ^ ricitltof :., . ^;; . . . Saint Francis ( Co ., Ark *; ; . :.. j . i v ; f « EDITOBS WBSTBBN BUBAL : —The growth of the 8 tate from whioh we write , although retarded by numerous causes , has been surprising and wonderful . The inorease in population in former periods was mainly along the navigable streams of whioh Arkansas has more miles than any State in the Union , but more reoently the fine uplands , brought into market by the extension of railways , have given a more active and general impulse ; and there is no question that the boom whioh has really set in will continue to inorease as the abundant resources of the State for money making beoome more widely known . The St . Louis , Iron Mountain and Southern Railway , a part of the Missouri Paoifio system , has been the ohief f aotor in the recent development . Spurs and branohes have been built into inviting fields , chief among whioh is the Knobei branoh from the main line to Helena . At Forrest Oity this line onuses the M...

^ oHicnltttral Maple Sugar Making . . In the report of the Department of Agrioulture , there is an artiole devoted to the above subjeot whioh has interested us and will doubtless Interest many of our readers . The pioneer settler tapped the maple with his ax , ontting two notohes into the tree near the root , sloping inward and downward and nnder the point where these wounds converged he drove an iron gouge , to make plaoe for a curved wooden spout . To this suooeeded the augur and wooden spout . The holes were at first an inoh or three-quarters of an inoh in diameter . The . usual size is now five-eighths , but in Northern Ohio . where more sugar is made in oertain favored localities than in any other part of the world , they use a three-eighths bit and insert but one spout to a tree . In very many oases two spouts are put in , thus increasing but not doubling the yield , whUe the injury , suoh as it is , is twioe as great . The most suooeBSful manufacturers generally recommend but...

| > t »» nttft Chemistry of Cleaning . At this time , perhaps more than any other the housewife needs to have all the hel ps whioh chemistry or any other soienoeoan furnish in the matter of making easier the dreaded work of house cleaning . There are those who beUeve the only agencies to be employed in this work are the sorubbing brush and soft soap with a liberal application of elbow grease . But the same spirit of investigation and inventive genius that has lightened the farmer s toil in BO many directions has not left this field untouched . Soap of oourse oannot be dispensed with , the only objeot being to procure and use that whioh wiU give the best results for the least outlay of time and money . The aot of oleansing whether of our skins , our olothes , our painted woodwork , onr windows or our dishes , consists of two distinot operations ; first the solution of the oUy matter whioh causes the dust and dirt to adhere , seoond the meohanioal removal of the dust and di...
