COLLEGE DRIFT . [Newspaper Article] — Daily Illini — 15 December 1880

COLLEGE DRIFT . EXCHANGES . We have to note an increase in the size of the College Review . Four pages have been added . A paragraph in regard to the tardiness of certain college papers in making their appearance , somewhat loses its point when the Review itself is late with its November number . Be that as it may , we will add a word of condemnation , and request our tardy brethren to be a little more punctual . Our belief in the old saying , better late than never , is very limited , but better never late meets with our hearty approval . Our illuminated Canadian friend , The Varsity , has changed its face . The new title page is a great improvement on the old . The young woman , however still looks very demure , —quite different from the spirited expression of the girls here , especially that put on when one makes a remark opposing co-education , or derogatory thereto . Minerva , this time , like Christopho Colombo , is on a bust , but nevertheless looks happy . The contents of th...

The students have a government similar in organization to our own . The theological department has nine students , one of whom is a young woman . The class in geology early in the term took a trip along the batiks of the Mississippi to explore the rocks near Alton . KNICK-KNACKS . [Newspaper Article] — Daily Illini — 15 December 1880

KNICK-KNACKS . A certain member of 85 thus reasoned it out : • Now , it looks as if there would be a snow storm , Uncle Sam has a horse and harness , likewise a beautiful cutter . I have a girl . I guess I will spend Thanksgiving at home . Scholium—He was absent three days . —Tripod . Make the one stove boom , Professor , Only the one stove boom ; Twill keep the little life I have , Till I get back to my room . —Tripod . Proverbs from the Acta : — Little tutors have long ears . It is never too late to spend . Money makes the beer flow . Examination is the thief of time . . A crib in hand is worth two in the sleeve . • A little peach in the orchard grew , A little peach of emerald hue . —Kansas City Times . We hope that the new year and the new term which have now fairl y begun will be happy and prosperous to all our readers . Few things occurred during last term to disturb the regular study , and much hard work was accomplished . This present terms work will probabl y be more interrupted by various meetings and entertainments than was that of last term , but still these should not be allowed to interfere with the class duties which are laid upon every student . The five months of study which lie between now and commencement will result in much good to all members of the University if they are rightly used . But they may pass for nothing if too much attention is paid to outside affairs , which always become more and more plentiful as the end of the college year approaches . While class work should be no less good than that of last term , the work of the societies should be better . Most of the members have grown accustomed to the writing and delivering of productions upon the platform ...

We give in this number a statement of the results arrived at b y Professors Weber and Scovell from their experiments with sorghum . Many of the students have watched the progress of these experiments with interest , and some have aided in them . To these especially will this statement of results be acceptable . The value of the facts which it brings to light should make it not uninteresting to others . Still we expect to hear from various sourcesj from certain of our exchanges in particular , that a judicious editor of a college paper would never have placed it in his columns . Very well . We are entirely in sympathy with the rage for the light and fanciful in college journalism , but this does not prevent us from dealing with facts and recording from time to time the valuable work done in our laboratories .
