It is a strange paradox, that man, whose existence is only possible when he conforms to natural laws as manifested within and wound himself, should at the same time bo obliged to spend his life in a perpetual battle with natural agencies. He is at war with the whole animal kingdom, and must neces sarily either subdue or destroy them, or be himself destroyed. If ho wishes for a place to [pitch his tent, or to bnild a city, he can only gain it by the destruction of the plants and trees which occupy the ground, ltut let him cease from his aggressive movements oven for a short time, and vegetation will assert her suprema...

THE TTITLY DISPATCH; ~ RICH MO Nn . VA.: ■mrnsDAV MOKNtNO, At'OfST g. ,RV, __ The Cincinnati Slave Case. On the 17tli, the case of McQuerry, afngi lire slave, claimed by Henry Miller of Ken tucky. came up before Judge McLean oftl< United States Supreme Court, for adjudica tion. The fugitive had the powerful assist ance of Mr. Birnev, as counsel, and every possible objection was taken both to the law and to its application in this particular case. ' The decision of Judge McLean is publish ed at fuU length, in the Cincinnati Commer cial of the 18th. It is a document of great power, but so long that we cannot make room for it. The fact that he was a slave was fully established by witnesses who had known him from boy hood. Mr. Birnev took the ground that it had not been proven that Kentucky was a slavehold ing State. On this point, th...
