From Uicso premises, It follows that Vcrmonl and Now Hampshire, would each bo taxed an nually $521,733 for the support of Government. The total population of this State is 291,948, and if the direct tax M to lo imposed equally upon the inhabitants, each Individual man, wo man and thud must pay one dollar and seventy tight cents annually. If the tax was imposed upon tho grand list of the State, tho effect would not bo less bur densome to tho people. The last grand list amounted to $783,434, and tho direct tax for tho support of Government would swallow up two-thirds of it annually. It would tale sixty-six cents out of every dollar of it.
