Sacramento City. [Newspaper Article] — Sacramento Daily Union — 26 May 1851

Sacramento City. This city is fast filling up with new and old residents. The arrival of two steamers laden down with human freight, and the disastrous conflagration at the Bay, have tended to add greatly to our population. These accessions to our numbers must continue, and we have nodoubt that the ensuing year will show as large a proportional increase of population as any city in the State. And why should it not be so ? We have the choicest blessings of a benignant Providence showered upon us in the richest profusion ; our climate is as genial and balmy as that of Italy : our winter days are shorn of their harsh severity by the temperate southern wind, and the-hotest days of summer are rendered cool and delicious by the breezes which are wafted from Nevada's snowy peaks. The society of this city is as intelligent, refined and social as in the most highly favored communities of the eastern States ; and although every section ef the Union has its representatives here, there is a sym...

From Feather Rivrr. [Newspaper Article] — Sacramento Daily Union — 26 May 1851

From Feather Rivrr. Mr. Watkins, of Georgia, who has been for the last year on this stream and its tributaries, called upon us yesterday on his way homeward. He states that above Rich Bar. and on the upper North Fork, the miners are doing well, although much troubled with water. From the claims which have been worked near the river, large amounts have been taken out. and there is every prospect that the richest portions of the leads are those now under water. From the rocky nature of many of the bars it will be impossible to construct canals so as to divert the stream, and reach the deposits in its bed. Miners are pushing up the branches of Feather river higher, than ever before, intending to await patiently the falling of the streams before ci minencing activeoparations. Provisions are abundant and reasonably cheap. Mr. Watkins informed us that although he was suffering from chills and fever con- ! c msiderably since his residence in the mines. yet he has been enabled by diligent l...
