THURSDAY. MARCH 31, |<)r* B ASTROP COUNTY TIMES. SMFTHVILLE. TEXAS "WS? SEC II. PAGE 3 Reassessment Deadline Set FORT WORTH -- Ranch- ers and farmers who want their land reassessed for taxation on productivity instead of .market value are urged by J.A. Whittenburg III, president of the Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association, to do so before April 30, 1977, the deadline in most Texas counties for tax assessors. More farmers and ranch- ers now qualify for this reassessment because of a 1976 Texas Supreme Court ruling in O.L. Gragg vs. Cayuga Independent School District. Before the landmark case, assessors interpreted the Texas Constitution's section on agricultural valuation to mean that a rancher or farmer must derive 51 per cent of his net matton showing the land has been used for agriculture, the landowner is an individ- ual and not a corporation, and that, in addition to actually owning the land, he has agriculture as his primary occupation and source of income. MARCH 31,1977 Energy Planning Urged m •; BASTROP -- At the Bastrop Chamber of Com- merce banquet Friday night. Congressman J.J. "Jake" Pickle called on Central Texans to develop a plan to reduce energy demand and convert to alternate energy sources. Warning that President Carter's new energy plan may dictate the elimination of natural gas as a boiler fuel. Pickle pointed out the energy shortage this may bring about in Central Texas. LCRA, according to Pickle, currently uses gas to generate 93% of its electricity, and immediate conversion to another fuel is simply not a possibility. In order to maintain the availability of utilities and a healthy business climate. Pickle urged "a big push now for using lignite. It should be mined here, at Camp Swift, and burned here t...

THURSDAY. MARCH 31. 19?"* BASTROP COUNTY TIMES. SMITHVTLIE. TEXAS TMSl PAGE 7 String Prairie Hosts Motorcross Dark clouds loomed in the background as hundreds of people stood gawking down muddy trails while getting drenched with rain. This was the setting for the Strng Prairie motorcross race held Sunday. The weather pk ved against motorcross partici- pants as 1800 spectators strained to hear the roar of motorcycles coming to their check points. Trails that were almost impassable because of mud got deeper as the drizzle and constant use combined against the riders. Early arrivals viewed the 8 a.m. take-off of the 478 entries. Participants eyed the 68 miles of muddy and sloppy terrain that made up the course of the first motorcross to be held at String Prairie. Mud-covered cyclists battled all day with the tight, rough course only to face the finish line crowd, urging on the contestants. The Side Winders out of San Antonio who sponsored the race were pleased with its outcome. Mary Ra...
