HSU Keeps Ranking By Heather Smoot Staff Writer In its latest issue the U.S. News and World Report has once again recognized Hardin- Simmons University in its publication's ranking of 2000 col- leges and universities from across the United States. Using the basis of the Carnegie Classifications U.S. News groups similar schools together for comparison. After data is gathered on sixteen indicators of academic qualities the colleges are ranked within their category by the total weighted score. HSU finds itself among those grouped in the Western Universities Division and has for the second year in a row been placed in the second tier. One area to which U.S. News looks for rankings and to which HSU has been making measureable strides of improvement is retention. According to Dr. Dan McAlexander associate vice president for planning and dean of graduate studies at HSU efforts like the opening of the Advising Center last fall and the start of the Student Success Seminar have helped to cont...

The Economics of Revival By John Mark Tittsworth Staff Writer I his column is to encourage individuals to taxepart in a revival that is enacted by Jesus on this campus. I do not speak from the position of an expert; I am a follower of Jesus and a student of His Word. The meat of these articles is found in the Scripture I cite not in my opinions or explanations. When you have a few spare min utes I hope you will sit down with a Bible and consider what God says about my subject mat ter. In the last article I asserted that revival of holiness begins with humility on the individual level see Luke 18 for further study. After we realize how desperately we need Jesus we move on to the application of faith. I say "application of faith" because the notion that we simply "must have faith" is a lie that has ren dered many Christians useless for Christ's king dom James 2:14-26. The kind of faith that glorifies God is the one that lives according to His Word. In Psalm IS David asks the LORD who ...

Verve is the Word The Verve Pipe The Verve Pipe Grade: B The Verve Pipe's sophomore album takes the group in a new but creative direction... HIBflLW1 By Jason Casselberry Graphics Editor Remember that catchy tune "The Freshmen" that The Verve Pipe put lout in 1997? Remember the number of albums they sold because of that one single? After a two year hiatus The Verve Pipe has returned with a follow-up to the chart bust- ling Villains. If you come expecting the same power pop from the previous album you'll despise this record. However if your interest- ed in well-crafted rock with tinges of pop and arc looking for something difer- ent The Verve Pipe's self titled release should be right up your alley. The CD begins with the hard rocking "Supergig" which displays hard gui- tar riffs and interesting vocal work. The recent single "Hero" is a crowd- pleaser with hook-filled lyrics and a catchy beat. The closing track "La La" is a fun track and if it can't put a smile on your face therapy c...

Gimme Hive! By Bryan Tuck Entertainment Editor Twenty years after John Hurt's chest exploded in moviegoers' faces ALIEN and its offspring return in a new collector's edition VHS and DVD set... In conjunction with the 20th anniversary of Alien Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment has released the Alien Legacy boxed set on VHS and DVD. The DVD set prevents the four films in widescreen format and the VHS set is available in both pan-and-scan and widescreen editions. Included with the VHS set is the documentary The Alien Legacy and it is offered as a mail-away with the DVD set. The four Alien films are also avail- able separately in both standard and widescreen formats. By today's standards the first Alien film moves along rather slowly. Give it a chance though and you'll find one of the creepiest and most articulate- ly designed horror films ever made. Ridley Scott's eye for detail combined with the nightmarish psy- choscxual designs of H.R. Gigcr including a gen- uinely frightenin...

Birds of a Feather By Melissa Robinson Staff Writer HSU theatre department begins season with THREE BIRDS ALIGHTING ON A FIELD... The Hardin-Simmons University Department of Theatre opens its 1999- 2000 season o September 30 1999 with Three Birds Alighting On a Field by Timbcrlakc Wcrtcnbakcr. Three Birds concerns the modern art world and the community that sur- rounds it. It is a parable of England in the 1980s under Margrct Thatcher's rule as Prime Minister. Though this is not a political play it is one that deals with the unscrupulous "me" society: the pscudo upper-class and the money grubbers the critics and the artists the Americans and the British. The group of characters arc thrown against two apparently symphathetic leading characters Biddy junior Alyson Cole and senior Stephen Kyle Scaggs. In reality Cole and Scaggs arc antagonistic characters that entertain the audience with a beautifully directed excursion into contemporary Great Britain. Biddy carries her Gucci bags poli...

1. li 1 M J i i 7( i ' 1 9n My Hqrse Sports Dr. NOOOOOO SOUP FO' YOU" said the Cowboys for the second game in a row this season. However that didn't stop Head Coach Keeling from going postal (I may be cxagcratin' a little) on 'cm after the game and rightly so. For the second week in a row the Cowboys have scored just one TD or less in a com- plete half of play. If they're planning to get away with that kind of split effort against a team like McMurry they'll be watching the big dance from the sidelines (you know like that one girl at the prom who has just a little too much facial hair for your liking). The Cowboys I'm afraid might be assuming wrongfully that an undefeated record alone is going to get 'cm in the postseason door. The Dr. was.looking at some of the scores post ed by the teams ranked above the 'Boys and they were puttin'down teams like an 0-2 "Peter" Pan handle State by much more than just one TD. Willi the kind of politically correctmercy-to-thc-weak philosophy the 'Bo...

By January Parker Staff Writer FOURTH to tyc FOUR You might hear Coach Jason Wharton of the Cowgirls soc- cer team chanting the phrase "Fourth to the Four" during one of his team pep talks. This will be the fourth year in a row that the Cowgirls have hopes to win the conference although Heather Thornton claims "It is not merely a hope that we win..we WILL win." The second four represents the confidence that Coach Wharton has for the teams posibility of going to the final four. The Cowgirls have already begun to set their reputation as a team achieving excellence. Every aspect of their time together from each practice to each game shows how they emphasize the importance of excellence. The Cowgirls are already at 5-0 in conference which shows that they arc ready to repeat their history and will pretty much have the ASC clenched as the conference champi- ons for the fourth year in a row. One of their secrets to this year's success can be attributed to the "Four F's" of the Cowgirls. Co...

iTueeA Upcoming Home Schedule I t Jk Tale of Two 6eaaona k '.. A By Mike Sims Staff Writer f u. i! - r-. i ( 8 The world of sports has always been a fair- ground of potential controversy. While some of it is false some of it is true it all adds to the sports mystique. This seems to be the case on every team even from a small university in Abilene. Whenever a coach leaves a team a unique sit- uation occurs. Generally there arc three major results of a new coach. They will stay with a given system (ala Ray Rhodes of Green Bay) and work with what they already have they will total- ly disassemble a team (ala Jimmy Johnson when he first came to Dallas) and rebuild from scratch or they fall somewhere in the middle. Those play- ers who fit in with the system normally invite the change and embrace the new ideas. Those who do not somehow find a way off of the team and generally not on good terms. Last year marked the first season that the HSU Girl's Volleyball team would go without Coach Gin...

WtWUMUlM Predicted to be on top Cross Country teams to make run for it When it comes to running this year's Cowboys and Cowgirls Cross Country Team has it down to a fine art. With four returners coming back for another campaign Hardin- Simmons cross country team looks to be a soild competitor. The addi- tion of four experienced freshmen runners have made the team a guar- antee competitor for many meets in our conference and competitive division. The Cowgirls put four great young ladies together on the roster this year. Amanda Arnold has been the club president for the last four years. She is the top runner from last year's team and will pro- vide qualitiy leadership and dedica- tion for this year's younger runners. Diana Sarles also returns with the title of last year's "Club Sports female athlete of the year" and gives the team a great boost to fin- ish on top. Nick Reeves the Cowboys "Club Sport male athlete of the year" returns with a mission. Look for Nick to be one of the con s...

g naked provides a learning experience ; & ; ' 'i I By Laine Walker Editor-In-Chief I have a recurring nightmare. (That makes it sound like a disease doesn't it?) It isn't one of those where I get killed or even one where I fall in love with Prince Charming sad but true. But through this recurring nightmare I have discov- ered a part of myself I tried to hide underneath the smile of independence. The people change and the scenery changes but the dream's point of intention remains the same. The latest version goes something like this: I am the guest at a party where everyone at that moment is honoring my incredible capabilities (don't gloat we all wish for that). I descend the staircase with a sweepingly grand entrance I am confident proud and radiant. That is until I real- ize I am completely naked. I am no Freudian expert; in fact up until col- lege I thought "freud" was some sort of German entree. So I find it odd that through the events of the past few weeks I am able to unde...

&OUit? lfll4f&itUy By Magaly Acosta Staff Writer Just like the years before the student body has chosen five girls to represent Hardin-Simmons in the University Queen Court. Which is the better candidate or is there such a thing? With these five beauties the more appropriate question is who will best serve such an honor? Kami Nunn a Psychology major from Tyler is a Sigma Alpha participant who is involved in All-School Sing this year. She is also part of the Grace Leadership Team. "HSU has been so much fun and there have been so many memories made. I am so excited and blessed by this honor. Invest your time in the things and people that are truly important to you. What is done here impacts your life tomorrow. It goes by so quickly so make every sec- ond count" Nunn stated when asked what HSU has done for her life. it's More Than Just A Card - nH BJbbBBWBHK mm ill Hi The word around campus has been "one card." Students are realizing the only way to eat enter dorms after hours or check out books is to obtain this new card. Unbeknownst to many students on campus though the capa- bilities of the card extend much farther than the Forty Acres. The new one card is a program devel- oped by Student Advantage a Boston-based company that affronts itself as "the nation's largest student membership program." The card targets college students and offers them dis- counts and opportunities under a yearly mem- bership of $20. However Hardin-Simmons University received a corporate sponsor AT&T who supplied the membership fee and equip- ment. Together Student Advantage and AT&T offer college students faculty and staff advan- tages across the nation. The hardest thing for students may be figuring out how to use the card. "The card isn't anything unless you know how to take advan- tage of it. It empowers ...

BoardTalk: HSIPs Board of "IVustees By Dr. Hall Contributing Writer Hardin-Simmons University is more than just West Texas smiles. The framework and foundation of the University is not no matter how a student tries to persuade another the Cafeteria or Anderson Hall. It is however a group of separate but complimen- tary boards that maintain and develop the Forty Acres. One such board is the Board of Trustees. The Board is comprised of up to forty-two members all elect- ed by the Baptist General Convention of Texas. The Board of Trustees sets university policy approves budgets establishes the tuition rate and makes major deci- sions about the buildings and grounds of the campus. Recent suc- cess has flourished in the Board including approval of the HSU Commitment and the construction of a number of buildings with over $9 million in campus improve- ments that will be finished over the next fifteen months. However the Board of Trustees is not stopping there. Chair of the Board of Truste...
