The attention of the Minister in Charge of the Wheat Pool (Senator Russell) was on Friday directed to a statement reported to have been made by the Minister for Lands in New South Wales (Mr Ashford) on his return from a meeting of tlie Wheat Board to the effect that ow ing to drought conditions and the scarcity of wheat in New South Wales, a rite in price was inevitable and that that would mean that millers and others would be re quired to pay about 6/6 or 7/ a bushel. A notice to the following effect was posted at the Litbgow Iron Works on Monday-—" la conse quence of the excessive Increases in railway freights for our business, which came into force on 1st Janu ary, ranging up to 150 per cent., it is impossible for us to continue under such conditions, We are compelled to close down until fur ther notict. We intend to ste the Premier at once, with a view to ss curiug an adjustment, and we hope that ibe stoppage will be a short one." In view of the very late passage of the Local Government BUI through Parliament the Govern ment has givtn consideration to the question of postponing the com mencement of certain portions. The Minister for Local Govern ment (Mr J. D. Fitzgerald) an nounces that it has been decided that the provisions of Part XIV, relating to Country Towns Water and Sewerage, shall be postponed and not be brought into operation until 1st September, 1920.
