Northern Territory Times. PALMERSTON: SATURDAY, MAR. 20, 1875. [Newspaper Article] — Northern Territory Times and Gazette — 20 March 1875

NORTHERN TERRITORY TIMES. Palmerston : Saturday, Mar. 20, 1875. The present week has been one of   no ordinary moment in the usually dull history of the Territory, but unfortunately the occurrences which impart a special interest to ourselves, as well as to the many beyond the tropics are fraught with the deepest sorrow. The first subject we have to refer   to is the meeting held on Tuesday evening last, at which the Govern- ment Resident presided, for the pur- pose of raising a fund for the relief of such of the families of the lost pas- sengers in the ill-fated Gothenburg as are imminently in need of assist- ance. That such a meeting should have been called, and that a deep interest should have been mani- fested in its object, is what would naturally be expected, considering how intimately the Northern Terri- tory was concerned in the fearful disaster referred to. Unlike the general run of public assemblages in Palmerston, the meeting in question was calm...

COUNTRY CORRESPONDENCE. STAPLETON. (From a Correspondent.) March 15, 1875. [Newspaper Article] — Northern Territory Times and Gazette — 20 March 1875

COUNTRY CORRESPONDENCE. STAPLETON. (From a Correspondent.) March 15, 1875. The shaft of the Good Hope Com- pany is down 15 to 16 feet. The lode in the bottom is well defined. The stone is dipping to the eastward, and in the eastern end of the shaft is little short of five feet wide, and shows gold freely. As the lode has enlarged in this direction, it carries richer stone than to the westward, where it it is narrower, and the stone itself is softer, aud will crush easily. It is interspersed with mundic, and the joints well lubricated with ferrugi- nous clay. The foot, or northern wall, is of purple slate, with a thin clay fiucan, -backed by a pale mica slate. The hanging wall has less sandstone than above, and is now a mica slate with a thin lining of pipeclay. From the u hcaddy" nature of the stone it is very easily worked, ana a good many tons are already at grass ready for the drays to take to the Virginia battery when the rains have ceased. The future prospects of the Company ar...
