KATOOMBA LAWN TENNIS TOURNAMENT. [Newspaper Article] — The Blue Mountain Echo — 13 November 1909

KATOOMBA IvAWN TENNIS TOURNAMENT. Thk King's Birthday holida}' has become a red-letter clay for Katoomba, for in addi tion to the annual Lawn Tennis Tourna ment, which is now being held for the fifth time-, there is as well an important meeting of the Rifle Club, with which we dealt in a leading article a week or two ago. Al though the time of year should lead one to expect good weather, the Tennis Tourna ments have been unfortunate in the weather three times out of four. By the law of averages it should be fine this 3'ear. How ever, it is gratifying to learn that very few of the contestants of former years will be absent from the present tourney, and that in addition to their number there will be a number of fresh players of a very high class. In our leading article of last week we ventured to suggest that a scheme should be arranged for the systematic advertising of the Blue Mountains. While little has been done in this direction, the Champion ship and Open I^awn Tennis Tournament...

PROPOSED TOWN HALL. [Newspaper Article] — The Blue Mountain Echo — 13 November 1909

PROPOSED TOWN HAL,!,. The report of Mr. Mollison, the officer sent up by the Works Department to hold an inquiry into the Council's proposal to borrow the sum of ,£3000 for the purpose of erecting a new Town Hall and Council offices, was read at the meeting Tuesday evening, and was a most interesting docu ment, ivir. iviomsou, in ms repon iu me Governor in Council, reviews the whole question in a most exhaustive and impar tial manner, and states therein that a new Town Hall is necessaiy ; that it is the duty of the Town Council to provide a Hall for the benefit of a town such as Katoomba is to-da}?- and will be in the future ; that the Council will soon have to face the building of new offices anyway, and that the present site of the Council Chambers is a good one, being within three minutes of the railway station, and in a fairfy quiet place, is on the whole a' very suitable site, though he would not say a better site could not be secured. Billy's Letter. (Continued from last week). [Newspaper Article] — The Blue Mountain Echo — 13 November 1909

Billy's Letter. (Continued from last week). It was a damp, bitterly cold day, and gave promise of an earl 3^ and severe winter. Since noon the fog had gradually descend ed, until, as evening fell, a thick gre\r mist enveloped the streets of Iyondon. Blacker and denser grew the clinging vapour, and lights suddenly sprang into existence from various standpoints in the busiest thoroughfares ; but even these did or the pedestrians much. Slowly and cautiously the conveyances picked their wa}^ along ; men with lighted lanterns led their horses b}' the bridle, bus drivers from their prominent heights halloed and-yelled like mad, while cabmen grumbl ed unceasingly, furious at this interruption to what might have proved a good night's work. Down in the vicinity of Westminster, where, if at all bad, King Fog reigns supreme, and where before a company of soldiers have been known to lose their way walk round and round in a complete circle, until the invaluable policemen on point duty came to th...

With Kitchener to Khartum. [Newspaper Article] — The Blue Mountain Echo — 13 November 1909

With Kitchener to Khartum. An exceedingly interesting lantern lecture on the above subject was delivered in the Congreatioual Church last Monday evening by the Rev. F. C. B. Fairey, of Tasmania. There was a good attend ance. Tlie lecturer related the facts leading up to the Soudanese war, with special reference to the cruelty of the Mahdi and the effect of Mahdism upon the people, ending with the crushing defeat of the Dervishes at the battle of Omdurmau, and the hoisting of the Anglo-Egyptian flair at Kartum. ihe character of Ivord Kitchener was graphically portrayed, and some incisive and apposite remarks were made concerning the .strange attitude of Mr. Hall Caine, the eminent novelist, toward the British Government in Egypt. Mr. Fairey \s re ferences to General Gorden were well received. During an interval in the lecture a series of hum orous pictures entitled. 'The dreadful doings of a demented cat on board a man o' war,' gave the children something which appealed more deeply t...
