Notes by "Mentor." [Newspaper Article] — The Shoalhaven News and South Coast Districts Advertiser — 18 November 1893

Notes lay 'Mentor.' We frequently hear of State children (chiefly boys), who have been appren ticed in the country, ahsconding front their' masters. Many attribute the cause to craftiness on the part of the unfortunate lads ; but I think this is a great mistake. If the boys re ceived proper treatment, few of such cases would be heard of. Some people may ask the question : What consti tutes proper treatment 1 * ? A farmer living in a remote part of the country gets one of thesn boys, ? through the recommendation of a clergyman. For ,a time, the boy receives that treatment to which he is justly entitled. But soon, alas, that fiendish .spirit which his master hides so well at times l«ginf- to assert itself, and his hapless charge has to bear the brunt of it. A pair of old pants is thrown to him, probably a pair which he had himself discarded (minus a part of the kg*), and a hat which had done service in the preceding generation, and which are in keeping with the rest of his apparel. The suspension of dredging work on tho river at the port of Greeuwell Point is a matter of much more serious moment than Was at first supposed, even by those persons who rtre the most deeply con cerned in the trade of the district with With a dredge of a type undoubtedly in adequate for the traffic demanded, and an inefficient tug-boat service that would I render, a dredge of larger capacity than the present cine equally useless, tho work of dredging the river, especially in the ' locality above stated, has. for years, been I unsatisfactory, to say the leant. The successive officers who have had charge of it did, it is true, get a lot of work out of the dredge 'Pluto,' but masters of trading vessels have an nvuiy occasions readily expressed the opinion that the aerrioo was not strong enough for the proper dredging of tlie channels.
