In view of the severe losses of stock Victorian dairy farmers suffered during the recent drought the State Ministry de cided to extend to them financial assist ance to place their herds again on a satis factory basis. In making the announce ment, the Minister of Agriculture said : " Cabinet has considered the question of assisting drought-stricken dairy farmers to replenish their depleted herds. It has decided to make advances to deserving applicants. The total amount of money to be provided for this purpose was not determined upon, as full information as to requirements has not yet been obtained. There was a very large representative attendance of, dairymen and others from the whole of the Western district, who competed strongly for every lot submitted, and the prices realised were highly satisfactory. The dairy herd of 80 head showed careful selection on the part of the vendors and their condition was excellent, prices ob tained being a record for this district. The average for 53 milkers was £14 15s lOd, and the whole herd, including heifers, calves and bulls (116 head), £11 13s 4d. The principal buyers were Messrs Daniel Ryan, George Wickham, D.
