A Salvation Army Marriage. [From a Melbourne Correspondent.] [Newspaper Article] — Queensland Figaro — 8 December 1883

A Salvation Army Marriage. [From a Melbourne Correspondent."} DEAB FIGARO : -This contribution may prove in teresting to your readers. The Melbourne Salvation Army has started a new dollar-catching dodge. The plan now is to pair off the devil-defying " soldiers " of the " Army" with the " Hallelujah lasses," and to marry them publicly, chargipg a fee for admission to.the ceremony. There are lots of money in it. The first go-off of the kind was held in Collingwood-a suburb of Melbourne chiefly remarkable as being the stronghold of roughs, larrikins and the scum of the criminal classes. This gave a Phillip, so to speak, to the tender passion of " Lieut." Tom Foley, who foley-edL the good exainple set, by hitching ihim: Carrie Steven son. .'...

It appears thafiStbm. found himself under the necessity of jumping either a horse or a gutter at Edwards and Chapman's .corner. However, 011 coming up to the horse, he seemed to consider it a big jump, or perhaps he remembered how Carthy once jumped a 4an. plank at racing sjieed. Anyway, he changed his'mind...
