THE NEW SHIRE OF WARRAGUL. TO THE EDITOR. [Newspaper Article] — Warragul Guardian and Buln Buln and Narracan Shire Advocate — 24 November 1881

THE NEW SHIRE OF WARRAGUL. TO THE EDITOR.. Sir,-Ishould have ventured to address you on the subject of our position and grievances long ago, but thinking you would not understand matters from my point of view, but would conclude that my opinion was a one-sided one, I refrained from ask ing you to ventilate the subject on behalf of the Neerim ratepayers of the Buln Buln Shire. I ought to have stated atthe outset that I am a Neerimimo myself, but notwith standing that fact (suspicious fact you might say), I think I may still lay claim to some little of that spirit of fair play of which Britishers so often boast, Now, sir, I wish you to understand before I proceed further, that the opposition at Neerini against the proposed new shire has been an honest fight for what the ratepayers believe will conduce to their benefit, and has been totally distinct from the factions opposition of the Drouin people, though we have had to pull in the same boat, "as it were." You will very likely say, '"...

THE SOUTH. [Newspaper Article] — Warragul Guardian and Buln Buln and Narracan Shire Advocate — 24 November 1881

- THE SOUTH. (FROM OTR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) 1 On Tuesday last the Annual Spring Show of the South Gippsland Pastoral, Agricul tural and Horticultural Association took place at the grounds, at Woranga. The weather for the past few days has been anything but fine and, when the morning broke with intermittent clouds and sun shine, the fears, so well known to old resi dents here, began to be participated in and. the old cry of "Show Weather" was resonant, and the hearts of the Southerners at but a small beat while their expectations were at zero. However, the dim mist was speedily expelled and a benignant Pro vidence smiled for a few hours on the scene: Perhaps, enpassant, the prophecy. regarding the last day and the date fixed for the show being synonymous had some thing to do with the poor-as a Cornish man would say-spirit in the early part of the day. Towards noon the day was excel lently fine and the large assemblage were then at what an ordinary entrepeneur would call "fizz point". ...

CORRESPONDENCE. THE LAW COURTS RESERVE. (TO THE EDITOR.) [Newspaper Article] — Warragul Guardian and Buln Buln and Narracan Shire Advocate — 24 November 1881

CORRESPONDENCE. THE LAW COURTS RESERVE. . (TO THE EnrrsL) Sir,-I should like to bring a matter be fore the immediate attention of the present Shire Council, if possible, and if not to those who may be elected in the new one. I refer to the very unsatisfactory condition' of the four acres of land known as the Law Courts Reserve, situated between the old site of the Wesleyan Church and the Church of England. This is about the largest area of utterly unimproved land within our township boundaries, and a rougher patch of soil, logs and under growth it is difficult to imagine. Now this, besides being a perfect harbor for vermin, must each summer become an increasing source of danger from fire to the rapidly increasing array of wooden buildings that are springing up around it. The scrub each year must become dense and the danger proportionately greater. In addi tion to 'this it is to all of us a very ugly eyesore. What I wish to suggest is that the council bring pressure to bear upon the ...

COMMERCIAL INTELLIGENCE. Guardian Office, Thursday. [Newspaper Article] — Warragul Guardian and Buln Buln and Narracan Shire Advocate — 24 November 1881

COMMERCIAL INTELLIGENCE. Guardian Office, Thursday.. Steadyi rain has fallen throughout the week, and farmers are jubilant, their ex pectations standing a much better chance of being "realised than at this time last week. Ploughing and ,planting,, though. carried. ounto a much greater extent this year than last, is nearly fihished, and during the next fortnight work will be carried on very briskly. Transactions during the week htie beehndonep rivately, which shows the desirability of at once establishing a weekly sale either at Warragul or Buln Buln. It will undoubtedly come to this, and the sooner it is started the better; the first one in is bound to make things go. Grass is plentiful, and holders of same are eager to secure anything marketable at fair prices.., Small mobs of store cattle are in' request. Sheep are, 'itho?t "buyers. Pigs and poultry are scarce. THE PRESIDENT AND CROULD. [Newspaper Article] — Warragul Guardian and Buln Buln and Narracan Shire Advocate — 24 November 1881

THE PRESIDENT AND C. OULD. It will be remembered that some time since the President and Cr. Ould, of the Buln Buln Shire, attended a deputation in Melbourne for the pur pose of furthering the claims of tram. construction in South Gippsland. Subsequent to the deputation Cr. Ould submitted a report to the Shire Council, -but owing to the meeting coming to rather an abrupt termina ?:on, the report was only read, and not ordered upon. At the last meet ing of the Council the report came on with others, when the following re marks were made: The President said that it was an unusual proceeding for one member of a deputation to present a report without concurrence of the others, and could only be accounted for on the supposition that Cr. Ould enter tained a high sense of his own impor tance. In fact he appeared to think that h'e was the great man of the part; ti:,t waited on the Minister for ailw~ays. That party comprised the President of Narraean with Cr..Wood, the Mayor of Walhalla with ...

A FEMALE IMPOSTOR. [Newspaper Article] — Warragul Guardian and Buln Buln and Narracan Shire Advocate — 24 November 1881

A FElMALE IMPOSTOR. The -usual dull routine of life at Warragul was varied during the past week by an :event which has smce been the theme of many a jest. An imposter, named Mary MclHaffie came amongst us with all the airs and graces of a lady (except in some few particulars, as her detractors now say), and took up her abode at the Club Hotel, where she managed to ingratiate herself with some of the gentlemen boarders, whose only cause of complaint against her seemed to be that she "put on too much side." She stated that she was the niece of Mrs Strong, wife of the Rev. C. Strong, of Melbourne, and that Dr. Stuart,,of Qrmond College, was.her brother, of whom she constantly; spoke as "Sandy ". She contracted a lia bility of thirty shillings at the Club, which was as far as Mr. Brace would let her go. He therefore. gave her a quiet but unmistakable hint to leave by ordering the servant in her presence, to clean -out the'rooth she had oc-' cupied.: Two ofher gentlemen friends, whose na...
