SUPPOSED BOAT ACCIDENT. PAYNESVILLE, Thursday, Sept. 7. [Newspaper Article] — Bairnsdale Advertiser and Tambo and Omeo Chronicle — 9 September 1882

SUPPOSED BOAT ACCIDENT. (FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) PAYNESVILLE, Thursday, Sept. 7. What appears to be another fatal boat accident has taken place here. On Tues- day morning one of the fishermen named Carstairs went out as usual to lift his nets, but did not return at night. This, however, did not cause any anxiety to be felt, as it is not unusual for the men to remain out longer than they intended leaving, but when as he did not return yesterday morning with his fish in time to catch the steamer, suspicion was at once aroused and fears for his safety were felt by the more timid. A couple of boats at once went to look for him, and while others were preparing to follow, the steamer Tarra called in at the jetty, and the captain stated that he sighted the top of a mast and yard of a sunken boat near the beacon at the mouth of the Mit- chell river. Immediately afterwards half a dozen boats proceeded to the spot, in order, if possible, to lift the boat, but their endeavors were futile,...

NOTES BY THE WAY. [Newspaper Article] — Bairnsdale Advertiser and Tambo and Omeo Chronicle — 9 September 1882

NOTES BY THE WAY. (YOUR SANDY'S CREEK CORRESPONDENT.)     One morning last week I crossed the range and dropped into Store Creek, where dwell an old and valued friend; from thence I wended my way to Lindenow, where I had some business to transact, passing through Lucknow and Bairnsdale, but as I have mis laid or lost my notes, and am afilicted with a wretched memory. I am compelled to leave unpublished matter that might or might not be interesting to your readers. Should I re cover my notes or my memory I shall be happy at some future time to cull what I think may be useful or interesting, to be pub lished should it meet with your editorial ap probation. After discovering my loss I had an inter- view with Mr. Saunders, whom I found to   be a thorough good fellow, and I regretted very much that time would not permit of me accepting his hospitable invitation to dinner. My interview with him necessitated my call ing at the bank, and, although it w...

LEAVES FROM A JOURNALIST'S DIARY. The Stolen Will. CHAPTER IV. THE RACES.—A FAMILIAR FACE. (Continued.) [Newspaper Article] — Bairnsdale Advertiser and Tambo and Omeo Chronicle — 12 September 1882

IE.t VES FlIW.3 A J.IIIUtNALSI"SV DIAlRY. T'i Stolen Will. (Ilr ACIIIIIMDES.) CIIAPTER IV. TIHE RACES.-A 1AMILTAR PACE. (Continued.) Mr. Evendale was not long in getting the competitors in an oven line, and he dropped the flag amidst the buzz of the most intense excitement. Away went Dumplin Dick with the lead, closely tfollowed by Neophyte and Al. cibiades, Occola and Flying Fox bheading the rest, Grasshopper being held back in the rear. In the order named they approached the hedge leading into the ploughed field, thoe jump being taken by all in grand style with the exception of Ocean Witch, who came down, and parting company with her rider, got up quickly and wouent in pursuit of the others on her own account. The heavy ploughed ground appeared to have less effect onl Dumpling Dick than the others, for before they were across the field hIe had increased hia lead, Neophyte, Alcibiadeos and Oceola giving way to Sly Fox, who took second place, and VWalter took Starlight Bess away fro...

THROUGH WEAL AND THROUGH WOE. CHAPTER VIII. A TERRIBLE SCRAPE. (Continued.) [Newspaper Article] — Bairnsdale Advertiser and Tambo and Omeo Chronicle — 12 September 1882

THROUG0H WEAL AND THROUGH WOE. By G. E. C. OHAPTER VIII. A TEaRrLV.E 8CRAPE. (Continced.) "Now girls," said Pickles, stopping suddenly, and in a solemn voice, "I shall enter the garden-you see if I don't." " Oh ! Pickles," remonstratod Edna, " don't get into fresh troubles; and you are with the rest of us. Remember it is only fo'r a fortnight more." " A fortnight more! " cried Pickles with her keen scorn; thank Heaven I am notso putty-hearted as you. I shall enter that orchard this afternoon, see if I don't." The girls wisely hold their tongues. It was worse than useless to remon strate with reckless Pickles then. She was so much quieter all the rest of the mirning that they hoped she had forgotten her rash threat. But after school they missed her; and Edna, Edith and Alice, rushing to the garden just caught her ladyship getting over the gate. They pulled her back, but kickine freely, she wrenched herself from thfleir grasp, crying triumphantly as she sprang to the ground, "I am her...

OUR OMEO LETTER. Friday, Sept. 8. [Newspaper Article] — Bairnsdale Advertiser and Tambo and Omeo Chronicle — 12 September 1882

OUR OMEO IFI'EII, (.roM oUR OWN COR?5REPONDENT.) Friday, Sept. 8. News reached here yesterday that a woman named Brewer and her son, a boy about 9 years old, had been drowned in the Mitta River, at what is known as Brewer's crossing, about 20 miles from Omeo. From what I cangather the circumstances are as follows:--Brewer' scrossing is the place that travellers to and from Sassafras, Zulu, Wombat and Snowy Creek. generally at tempt the passage of the river, and for his own and the public convenience Mr. Brewer had made a boat out of a hollow log, what is commonly called a "dug out." On the day in question MIr. Brewer was absent working at Omeo Plains, Mrs. Brewer and the two children, the drowned boy and an infant, being left at home. During tho day a Chinaman travelling from Gibbo to to Wombat wanted to cross the riverc. The boy, under the mother's directions, launchled the dug-out to bring the Chinaman over. Either through the river being high, or from some other cause, the boy lo...
