A DorBLE attempt has been made to get up a meeting in Rockhampton, on be- half of thc Distressed Operatives of Lancashire, but the call of his Worship the MA VOR has met with uo response. We can only refer this ignominious failure to the fact that a combination of circumstances prevented the matter from being taken up at an earlier period It appears that the Muncipal Council will nave recourse to another plan-hav- ing determined to apply by circular to the squatters in the district to contribute towards a Relief Fund, to be placed in thc hands of Sir CBABLES NICHOLSON, to be applied hy him as he may think best. Wc trust that this attempt will be more successful, and meet with general sup- port both iii the town and district.

LATER AND IMPORTANT FROM MEXICO. (From thc Resident Correspondent of the Alla California.) OTT or MEXICO, June 21, 1S02. FOR nearly a month, communist ion with Acapulco has been interrupted, and even thc Calimo and interior mails have been robbed by ganga of outlaws, as all thc available troop« arc concentrated at the «eat of war-to wit, in the neigh- bourhood of Oriraba. Zara gosa'fl annr, which numbered on the 14th inst, al'out 16,000 men, making him confident of further sun-ess. Neverthe- less he acted with prudence and loyally when he addressed Gen. Laurence!, per- mitting him to surrender on any terra** lie pleased, provided he would leave the country. But thc French General would not, of course, listen to such a proposition, bad as wv his situation, short of provisions and entirely isolated in a foreign eountrr. ile referred Zara- goza to M.
