The soldier's hand was useless when he sub mitted to . the -operation. He was first observed at the United States Army General Hospital, where it was recorded that because there was nd opposing sur face for contact with the thumb" nothing could be -grasped or held. The policy of salvaging every possible function of the injured hand and supplying the soldier with an artificial hand was considered.
