LOCAL GOVERNMENT The Annual Conference of the Local Governmefit Asociation recent-' ly held at Grafton had no doubts as to its views on major issues,'. said Ald. R. T; C. Storey, the newly elect ed President, in an interview. Some hundred 0odd resolutions were dealt with embracing questions of finance, rating, housing, public health, decentralisation and many others. Finance is so vital a mat ter to Councils that. it was not sur prising that it was imost vigorously discussed. The Conference re affirmed its conviction that the land rating system-the -main source of revenue for Councils, is inadequate and outmoded. Inadequate to provide the large sums of money needed to donstruct and maintain for modern needs, the 100,000 miles of road un der Councils' control and outmoded because the services now given by Local Government are shared by the whole community and are not mere ly of benefit to land and property.
