The Bermagui Mystery. [Newspaper Article] — Delegate Argus — 1 March 1907

The Bermagui Mystery. (By C. A. H. in "Truth.") Bermagui, situated within the county of Dampier, is a small and inferior port on the South Coast of N.S.W., about 170 miles from Sydney ; and is the outlet for the produce of the dairy farms within the rich districts of the Cobargo and the Tilbas. In the year 1880, a large rush of gold-seekers took place to this locality, gold in quantities being discovered four or five miles in a northerly direc- tion from the port, between the sea and a large tidal lake, extending to the foot of the Dromedary Mountain. This field was named "Montreal" by   the discoverers. The "rush" was of such magnitude that the Department of Mines despatched one of its ablest geologists to the scene, to investigate and report upon its probabilities. Mr Lamont Young, F.G.S., with a field assistant, a young German, supposed to have had some geological or mining experience in his own country, was entrusted with this particular duty. About the beginning of...
