T'H probable opening of a now channel for the commerce of the United Kingdom with China is announcod contemporaneously with, the anticipated departure of Sir William Denison for Madras. It is scarcely likely that his Excelloncy's now government will be materially affected bhy this now industrial enterprise ; but the proposal is of considerable importance in relation to the general comn merco of the Bay of ]lengal, It does not sooeem quite clear how long our trade with China has beeoon carried on by way of the dangorous and rocky navigation eaonstward of Singapore. It seems from recout discoveriesoa that, as late as the seventeenth century, British commerce with China must have found an outlet by way of the froptior of the Burmese territory ; at least it is found that to this day a largo brick " go.down" or ware house exists on that frontier, and the tradition is that it formerly belonged to English suer chants,. To the ditor of the Herald. i Smn,-Tho writer of a letter in your last issue very properly takes to task tihe editors of the ' Goulburn Chronicle' for their remarks respecting the recent beazaar. The expression, " The system has been soeered at by i few sour, solemn prigs and over fastidioos purists," is particularly and forcibly objected to. I quite agree with Fair' Play; and I would remind the very learned editors of the 'Chronicle' hat, when a bazaar was being held for a purpose not connected with the church to which they (the editors) belong, they gave insertion to a letter, signed "Paterfamilias," the object of which was to sneer most unmistakably at bazaars. Knowing who the editors are, and believing that I also know who "Paterfamilias" was, I will ask tho former whether they have tihe courage to tell the latter that he is " a sour, solemn prig, or an over fastidious Tpurist.'
