ZIONIST CONFERENCE. (Continued.) [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 10 June 1898

ZIONIST CONFERENCE. -??'.? ? s- ? ? ? -»? ? ? (Continued,) It seems clear, therefore, that in the age at the Crusade the Jews, though few in Palestine, were powerful and prosperous in the Moslem Countries beyond its limits, controlling in a great measure, the trade between Europe and Asia. Even the Latins of Syria, in the thir iienth century, did not escape from the nec essity of borrowing money from the Jews as is witnessed ' by existing documents, and about the time when Saladin took the Jews' quarter pf Jerusalem, occupied the north-east part of the town, and not a3 now, the south-east por tion. PILGRIMAGES Af ier the fall of Acre, and the, loss of Pales tine to the European Christians, Jewish pil grims continued to visit Palestine, and have left us short memorials of their journeys Among these may be mentioned Samuel Bar TJri. of Biel, whose ' Jichu ha Aboth1 dates irom 1564, and is illustrated by rough sketches. Enemies from Within. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 10 June 1898

Enemies from Within. The greatest mischief done to Jews comes from renegrades born within the fold and occasionally from those whose perversity or i 1 advised actions have led their brethren to disasters of greater or less moment. So many have been those who turned against their brethren that among the Solemn prayers formulated for the daily prayer service is one directed to the ' calumni ators,' as to whom the supplication goes up ' let there oe no nope. jews would nave sunerea mucn irom the ' Meshummed ' Pfefferkorn had there not been in his day, by the grace of God, a foil in the person of Reuchlin. In our own times, in another sense, it is the same. The apostates are those usually employed as missionaries to Jews, but at the same time they are frequently the most unscruplous the church could employ for any purpose, and their own evil nullifies their work. The 'emancipated' among Jews do us harm, whether that term be used in its higher sense or applied to the degraded who are som...
