NOTES AND COMMENTS. [Newspaper Article] — Mercury — 5 August 1876

NOTES AND COMMENTS. nY COSMOPOLITE. In looking over the daily papers I obsoerve some very queer advertisements, in fact what the object of the advertisers can be I hardly know-" A young lady with a large fortune left by a deceased relative wishes to meet with a young gentleman with a view to matrimony;" or else, "A young gentleman who has just received a compet oney, wants to mooeet a young lady who has an income. Intentions honorable, and photograph to be enclosed in replying to Z.X.Y., post office, Melbourne." Strange that those persons cannot, within the circle of their acquaintance meet with "some one to love," and are as a last resource, compel. led to cast themselves and their desires before the public I But advertising now-a. days is conducted on a very different scale to what it was years ago. If you want to 'buy or to sell, to make or to mend, to borrow or lend, to marry or give no credit to the partner of your choice, advertising is the modus operandi by which these matter...

MISCELLANEOUS. [Newspaper Article] — Mercury — 5 August 1876

MISCELLANEOUS. 'T'ue following not of corngoous solf.con trol and'presonco of mind may hi compared with advantago to the honors won by deeds of daring on the fold of battle. Two work. men wore engaged fixing a lightening con dnotor on the summit of the steeple at Villo sur-Ourtho, in Belgium, To accomplish this somewhat difficult and dolicate task it was necessary that one of the workmen should stand on the shoulders of his companion. While in this position, a violent gush of wind made the topmost man spill some molten leoad, which foll on the hand and forearm of his friend. Notwithstanding tho sudden intensity of the pain thus inflicted, the victim of this ncoldent had the courage to remain motionless while the load burnt its way into his flosh. He know that the slightest movement might suffice to precipi tate his companion from a holeight 70ft. into the stroot below, and ho bravely endured the padn rather then imperil the life of his follow worker.
