CHURCH OF ENGLAND SYNODS. [Newspaper Article] — Northern Times — 18 July 1857

CHURCII OF ENGLAND SVNODS. The establishment of Provincial and Diocesan j Synods is a matter of too great an importance to ' be neglected by the press, however anxious one j may feel to avoid the discussion of religious sub jects. This important question is before the public, | and is enlisting the interest of some of the most distinguished members of the laity. There cannot possibly be involved in its consideration any point I of doctrine, or we would not approach it; but as long as the Church seeks State aid we fearlessly ; assert the right to point out any and every evil besetting its government. ?Circumstances have lately combined to bring the eflect of uncontrolled clerical rule vividly before the public mind, and to exhibit it in any thing hut a favourable liyht. The calm temper — pure-mindedness — and charitable meekness which we expect to see displayed by the heads of a religious body have been painfully supplanted by the bitter sneer — sophistical argument — and perse cutin...

SUBMAHINE TKLEGRAPII. The manufacture of tho submarine cable which is to connect Kngland nnd America, goos on with great ra pidity* The task of making it is divided between Messrs. Tho rntu of) manufacture at Glass and Klliott's is 7(- miles a week, which they will shortly increase to 100 mile*. A description of tho cahlo would occupy too much I ! of your space ; it will bo sufficient to say that it differs principally from thoso previously made in being lighter, stronger and less costly.
